Major Harmonic Balancer Removal issues....

Hey guys,

Replacing the engine...

I am at wits end with my 626, I have everything pulled except the harmonic balancer. Long story short, it wont come off for anything. Penetrating oil, impact wrench, breaker bar, no go. I tried to lock the pulley, but couldn't do it so I shoved a crowbar under one of the notches and then tried using a 3 1/2 foot long giant torque wrench to break the bolt, and instead I twisted the engine mounts and LIFTED THE FREAKIN' CAR OFF OF THE JACKSTANDS!! Then I snapped the wrench internals (1/2" drive). If this doesn't come off with this much force, I don't know how it'll come off at all. I have no idea how the heck I am going to replace the engine. Can it just come off with the balancer on? It doesn't look like i have enough clearance. Please let me know, I am desperate. I know I must be missing something.

Thanks guys.

What exactly are you trying to do?.. change the engine? If so, leave the balancer on, there is plenty of clearance with or without the transmission on the engine.

I would recommend against the breaker bar in this case as it sounds like your bolt is severely stuck. You need to shock it into motion either by using your starter motor and a bar against the LCA, or an impact gun, or a bar and hammer, etc etc etc. Wheels on the ground with the transmission in a high gear are good for keeping the engine from turning.

I am just pulling the engine out and sticking a new one in. If it clears without having to remove the harmonic balancer, then, shoot, I'm leaving it on! Thanks.

Any progress on pulling it out with the pulley still attached?
