Custom sub mounts for the rear side panel

I was wondering has anyone attempted to make a custom sub or 6.5 mount behind the rear side panels inside of the car. i had to take the panel off to access a dent and was thinking about mounting a speaker on each side and cutting out a grill. 2 front door speakers, 2 rear deck speakers, and 2 rear side panel subs [ custom mounted ] Any thoughts?

Its been done before, there is a member on here that has exactly that. When I had my last 2nd gen, I mounted my EQ there. Bazooka makes a 6" sub that had dual 4 ohm coils, and is 200watts RMS. Its actually a very potent little sub. Two of those would rock fairly good I'd bet. I dont think they require a big sealed box at all, so I'm sure they'd fit in each "hole" quite easily.

Also, you may want to take a look at a few 8" 's too. 6" 's really dont have too much wallop I guess you can say. The Carver sound system my Z4 came with has dual 6" 's behind the seats, and yes they do pound remarkibly well for their size, but that comes at the expense of the frequency range. Its possible to get added output by designed the box to peak at a certain (typically higher) frequency (as in around 60hz), but with that you lose low end, meaning below the tuning frequency, you'll typically have a sharp drop off.

(In english, no deep bass, abiet you may have quite a strong/loud mid to low-range)
Thats the case with me. They can't drop overly low at all, and anything below 50hz is too much for them.
yes they do "get loud" but only to certain songs with a fairly mid-range bass line. That song by Akon & Young Jeezy (whatever its called) with that super low bass is just death for those little things, as most 6" 's they cant take it at all, even at low volumes.

With 8" 's, since they have much more cone area, the air they can move (which is what determines SPL) is significantly greater. Therefore these acoustic "trade offs" aren't required as much.
They can also typically be much more power friendly, as 200 watts RMS is the most power I've EVER seen to a 6". Most 6" are around 50-120 watts RMS. I'm guessing those MTX's are around 50-75 each.

There are many 8" 's that require very small boxes, about as big as a 6". I'd take some measurements and see what you can do. But two decent 8" 's will have the impact of countless 6" 's.
Personally, I'd be surprised if you could hear the 6" 's in the trunk over the speakers, given everything is set properly. They will accentuate the very low end, but they definately wont give you the bass I'm sure you'd be expecting, given the trouble of the install.

10's wont fit into those "nooks" very well. There is only a very small handful of 10" 's I've run across over the years that require a box small enough to fit into those areas in the way you'd like them to fit. Probably, perhaps 4 different ones, two of them you'll probably never find again as they were rare to begin with, and that their from 1993'ish.

They are ways of using a very unique box design called "Dipolar" but thats very very techincal, and requires advanced electronics to get the sub to reproduce the sound in a manner that works with the box design.
Subwoofer design
^ I know you wont read up on any of that, but thats it in a nutshell. Basically, you dont really need a functioning box to get bass. Its a marvelous concept, and would work great if you were hell-bent on 10 or 12" 's, all the while didn't want to use up anymore space then what you want to be available.

Digital Designs makes some fantastic (now discountinued) 8" subs that will definately blow you away SPL and SQ wise. They take a miniscule box, of perhaps .3-.8 cubic feet. Thats less then most 6" subs.

Dude are you some kind of audio expert? Yea i was thinking 8's but 6.5' also produce a good sound. I was thinking even 6x9's. But i'm pretty sure 8' FTW!

^ thanks, I sure used to be back when I was around 18 or so, but I forgot about 90% of what I used to know, now I'm practically an audio dumbass in comparison.

6x9's are not subs. there have been ..... I think two maybe three companies that have built an ACTUAL 6x9" subwoofer, but they are extremely rare, and I cant even remember a single manufacturer right now, Although I think Earthquake did in the late 90's early 2000's I'm fairly sure.
But 6x9's do NOT have the qualities that make a subwoofer, a subwoofer. They are typically designed for free air use (as in the back panel of a car) and do not have the techincal parameters that make them usuable as subwoofers. I can honestly say to you that you'll be wasting your time if you expect results from regular run-of-the-mill 6x9's placed in boxes, way back behind your rear seats in the back of your 2nd gen. (designing a box that'll make them usuable as subwoofers is damn near impossible as incredibly few manufacterers list the technical data of those said speakers that enable a person to design a box for them that'll enable them to produce decent bass

Just go with some decent 8" 's. honestly. There is that new post about those 6.5"s that Jaejw1 posted, I'd check into those as I didn't even know those existed, but you best best are two 8"s in a corresponding .5 cubic foot box, that would work beautifully in those said spaces that you want to place these in.
