Removing Silencer??

hey guys...

bought my 2g mx6 bout 2 months ago...the thing is its got a sports exhaust but its got a silencer put in. The tone of the exhuast sounds good when u listen to it closely, but its jus so damn quiet, almost sounds completely stock!

I'm wanting to remove the silencer jus to give it a louder n beefier sound, but nothing over the top. The guy that sold me the car said the loudness is 'adjustable'. My question:is this even possible for a muffler or silencer to be 'adjusted'in terms of volume, like is there something on the muffler that enables u to do this?? Cuz i always thought either have the silencer there and no volume, or take it off and get volume..nothing in between??

Any help would b appreciated. And also if theres no such thing as adjusting the sound, any idea how much $$$ to remove the silencer at d muffler place??..guessing not much?

Cheers lads...

I dont know about any silencer but i think the guy who sold it to you was refering to the VRIS system. (Variable Resonance Induction System) . I think it has 4 butterflies in the intake plenum and open up acording to your rpm so it changes sound. Sort of like VTEC, with the same basic principle as VTEC, to improve economy and low end toruqe etc. As far as the silencer goes i dont know but if any one does post it here id be happy to check it out, im interested as well.

Also fitting a CAI would make a nice decent sound.

Did it come with a remote ? check if the batterys are inserted correctly and charged.

common problem..

then you just select what channel you want for what sound u want and adjust the volume to suit.

OK ... they don't have a silencer. Maybe what you want to do is go to an exhaust shop and get them to fit a better muffler. Try a Magnaflow #14816 ...

... also, do a CAI, if you look in the 2G forums under "other performance mods" for "Prelude CAI" you should find plenty of information

Hope I've helped!

VRIS is not VTEC ... go wash your mouth out! Don't use both in the same post again!

I don't know much about this, but the only "silencer" things I've ever seen are an extra bit that slides in at the end of your "cannon" muffler to stop excess resonnance. By rotating the silencer, the slots on it will allow air to escape at a greater rate, hence allowing more sound to be emitted. They can also be completely unscrewed and removed (depending on the model of cannon) for maximum exhaust flow and maximum volume.

See image below: muffler and a silencer next to it.

You can get "silencers" for exhaust. I think companies like hks and apexi both make them. Its kind of like a butterfly that u weld inline with the exhaust, kind of like a throttle. They come in both manual and electronic forms.
Ill see if i can find a pic.
Not sure if your car has one of these.....but it is slightly possable, they are pretty rare tho
