Quite a while ago I asked if anyone knew where we could find a replacement diesel engine for my old bloke's '93 Capella Wagon. We didn't get around to picking an engine up as he had another 626 (petrol) that ran reasonably well.
That petrol Wagon is nearing death, and we can't even save that one with Jesiotrot's spare petrol engine due to Mazda's weird model year updates that make the wiring loom etc from a pretty clean '93 model completely incompatible with an '88 626 Estate.
OK. Back to what's rapidly becoming a blog. A couple of years ago my Dad bought what seemed an immaculate gray-import Capella diesel Wagon that had 88K on the clock. My folks spent the last of their spare cash on this lemon, as they're retired due to ill heath. It broke down not much past six weeks after they bought it.
A local diesel mechanic kept it for three months, but he basically had no bloody idea what he was doing and returned the car, still not running, with a bill for almost $4000. He will never get paid as far as we're concerned. The car has sat since then undercover, not going anywhere.
I'd love to help my Dad out with a reliable car, and today I looked at buying him a '93 petrol 626 Wagon, but my finances just won't stretch to it.
Here we get to the point - does *anyone* know where we can find a replacement 2 litre 626/Capella diesel engine? We've pretty much come up empty in Melbourne. Or even a dependable, honest local diesel mechanic?
I think this has gone on long enough, and I'd like to help my folks out. Thanks guys.

I am assuming that its an RF 2.0 Diesel and naturally aspirated.
Another option is to fit an FE or an F2/F2T. On the ECU side of things, i can supply you with maps and tell you how to get an ECU to run it for about 500 bux.
You will need to be able to wire the thing in and to be honest, it isn't that hard once you get going.
If you want, give me a call on (check your pm) and i can explain in detail about the last option.
Thanks Craig. The engine code is RF7; it's the supercharged version.
Jesse's engine actually comes with an ECU, but will there be any other troubles migrating from diesel to petrol? Obviously the fuel system will need to be replaced and how about the exhaust?
I've passed on your mobile number to my Dad (Robbie). He'll call you today.
Cheers
Steve

Its a shame your petrol wagon isn't a manual Steve. If it was, then I would have been happy to install the engine for you. But as I said when we spoke on the phone the difference between the ATX control on the two cars is too hard to work around. It certainly would be possible, but I'm not an auto elec or a mechanic and I'm not 100% certain I could get it to run properly.
I wouldnt want to pull your car apart, put it back together, and find that the auto wont shift gears.
Did you try giving Allmaz a ring? They should be able to sort you out with a replacement engine for the petrol car. The diesel engine might be a little harder to come by though.
pick a part should offer you some sort of warranty with the engine we just purchased a trx from there and have a 4 week warranty on the whole car (main bits anyways gearbox, engine etc) so if anything is wrong just take the enigne back.
Definitely moving to arrange a new diesel engine in the next month - my brother and myself are going half on the cost. I'd prefer to install a reliable engine with a warranty.
Does anyone know of an engine importer (prefer in Melbourne if possible) with an RF7 in stock? We've tried a fairly well known company but were told "you'll be lucky". Not very encouraging is it?

Yeah I agree with you, but we just want to get this thing back on the road as cheaply as possible. I think I'll get a couple of quotes though on a petrol conversion, just to estimate the feasibility of it. Aw I really wish he didn't buy this bloody car.....

Hmm - we're finally getting somewhere.... We've opted for trying to fix the beastie ourselves, but the major problem we have is there are absolutely no workshop manuals available in English, only German or Japanese. True, my old bloke is retired and has quite a bit of spare time on his hands and could take the relevant language courses, but I think it'd be bit of a shortcut if we found some RF7 documentation in English.
Luckily, during the '80s Ford executives decided to install the RF7 in British Escorts and American Tempos, and there are workshop manuals available. I've ordered a couple from Amazon. It's a start at last....
