My GV1124

Well after searching for a suitable wagon for work for a fair few weeks, I found one which was perfect!!! GV1124 with 120,000km’s, one owner well looked after, etc.

The car was fairly expensive, but I was prepared to pay for the condition it was in. I was about to leave home after agreeing on a price to give her a deposit, then she called me to tell me she wasn’t going to sell it anymore as it was just too good of a car.

Not long after, I saw another one for sale in Sydney. Same colour, same model, same features. For those of you playing along at home, it is a maroon GV1124 estate, with 15” alloys as standard. But at $4000 cheaper than I was going to pay!

I spoke with Striker who owns a 626 turbo and asked him to have a look at the car for me. He mentioned that it needed a few thing such as front and rear bumper and a grill. The interior was pretty good and the car needed a bit of a tidy up.

So I decided that it was worth a flight up to Sydney to purchase the car. I had Jesse come along for the ride. On first inspection of the car, I was fairly impressed with the car. Looking closely at the damaged body bits, it was obvious that it wasn’t going to need any structural repair work. All it needed was the bumper skins and the brackets.

The car drove very nicely on the way home with no real issues besides a poorly fixed exhaust gasket blowing out and the heater controls getting a bit funky with selecting. After helping the selector get into position, it seems to have held up ok.

The car had an alarm fitted, alas very poorly. It would auto arm 30 seconds after start up! There was also some other funky wiring with a household switch to turn the air-con on….. Anyway, I picked up a bumper and grill from an import Telstar nose cut, pulled the headlight brackets back into shape. I chopped out the Ford badge as it looked very dicky. I also pulled out the dodgy alarm and the air-con switch/wiring.

Next up I fixed the exhaust gasket leak, with a new gasket, but it would stay put due to the thread in the manifold being stripped. So again it blew out the side. So the easiest option is for me to get another manifold from the wreckers. Less hassle than a redrill and tap.

Nice pickup!

One of my pet hates is shonky electrical work, working in the electronics industry.

I have a theory that the only reason people have auto electrical problems, is their backyard stereo/alarm/driving lights etc

As a comparison between the GV1023 and the GV1124, we lined up both jess’s car and mine.

After all this, it was nearing RWC time. So I decided to look at the normal RW items. Brakes, suspension, etc. After listening to the caryard bloke rattle on about how all their cars get a safety check done before they’re sold, I couldn’t believe it when I pulled the brakes down. The pads were almost down to metal. The discs had a lip on the outer edge almost 2mm high! So in with some new Bendix Ultiamtes and slotted rotors that were originally on the black car.

I also decided that it needed the suspension out of the black car as the black car will be getting coilovers in the not too distant future. So in welt the custom built struts and spring combo. This included the camber bolts front and rear. The rear springs I fitted a pair of lows as the super lows would make the rear end sit about 1” too low.

I had a whiteline front strut brace laying around So that went on as well. I also had a spare 4WS rear brace and on with that too. Fitting the front brace was easy, the rear required a little extra work. The internal trims are held in via clip on top of the strut tower that fits into a piece of metal that is spot welded to the tower. It needs to be removed so that the brace can fit. The trims also need to be cut to fit the brace. So Jesse cut the upper and lower pieces perfectly to fit.

I also borrowed the wheels off the black car as they hd 95% tread and look cool to boot!

Stay tuned for more to come!

This is a very clean and neat car, and it drives the same/feels the same/sounds the same/and even kinda smells exactly like my car when i first got it.

It had no problems coping with out 1000km trip back from Sydney, apart for the dodgy air con wiring which meant it wasn't regulated so the compressor was going full pelt all the time. Making the air coming from the vents extremely cold and the aircon lines in the engine bay frosting over.

And it was only fair that I cut the carpet/speaker covers and install the rear brace, as Scott did mine back when i got my car.

Once the pesky auto and NA F2 is done away with this thing will be very nice

the Wagon bug is gettign you all is in it. LOL

Yes your all going to want Wagons

NICE ONE - even more reason for me to come to melbourne ASAP or at least soon.

same colour as mine.

your starting to notcie the difference between them I guess

like if you remove the cloth on the GV1023 speaker cover on the rear it's the same as GV1124. Oh my LOL

I guess your alos noting the Gv1124 being alot cheaper like that Vinal REAR boot seat AH.

Gee I really wish I still had my Gv1023 7 seat auto.

SABBI look on the yahoo auctioons Jess got the link HEAPS of that model body kits and parts available.

in fact even with the difference in the roof - the rear quater panel is the same part number as it only goes upto just above the back rear window.

10 year run for the GV means alot of parts off other models fit -they just might be different in minor area.

The chassis rails are same as all other Gv's and GD's excluding the 4WS manual.

I'll be doing the strut brace install as well soon but mine will be colour coded to my body work.

just do one thing boys DOn't get hit in the rear EVER. No more rear panels mazda or door/boot.

lucky enough a popular model in japan.

when I had the dash to bits, I noticed that the plastic ducting for the air con, etc is the same. instead of having the thumb wheels under the steering column and the glove box, they have foam over the vents and the panel is not punched out. Most of the differences are price related and interior stuff.
It does run an ignition system similar to the F2 turbos.

Come to Melbourne Rod so we can have a wagon race!

We always thought the 1124 had different rear guards, until we had them lined up next to each other. They are exactly the same. Now i'm thinking about converting to a 1124 rear end, bumper lights and garnish, and cool little spoiler. Its a bit more modern looking, and the bumper sits another 1" lower than a 1023 bumper.

For anyone interested heres some Yahoo Auctions search results links -

And these are for "GV" (mostly wagon stuff) -

actually I have spolier coming in it fits on top I've just don't know if I'll fit it, when it comes to melbourne I might sell it off as mine is in paint already.

yeah it's amazing how much is carried over. The motor is exactly the same Not one change - Reason being - they did not have to do anything even for emissions
the only thing done is Airbag because all cars by 1995 july had to have minimal a drivers air bag for - certain size and price etc. other wise mazda would not have done it.
The yanks made it compulsar in 1992 for them.

Fro the GV1124 - there is a way of getting the nicer leather wheel - use the Mx-6 and 626 Ge one. It's the same I air bag unit swaps straight across.

Only thing I'm not positive on but I have feeling you will find the GV1124 is related to the astina BA wheel more then the GE wheel so you might have to remove two msall metal tangs or bit's. but then the air bag unit stock one drops right into the leather wheel.
But finding now a good leather Ge 626 wheel can be hard.
And it's not a bad wheel and it's still legal.
You will find some bits are borrowed from the BA as well I have feeling the ventilation control panel is. funny it's push button where as the early ones were all slider cable.

The irony about the Gv1124 is it's really just a big cost cut exersie by mazda/ford japan to have one body/shape and panels for the final run.
To be honest I don't think it really was sold out side of japan and Aus. because i've never seen anywhere a GV1124 LHD. all are RHD

GV1023 yes I've seen LHD.

Irony of both of them is they are 7 seaters. but I guess if your doing conversion it don't matter too much. but one thing you both have I wish my 5 seater had is cruise control.

Rod, the 1124 doesn't have cruise. I was also thinking an RX7 wheel would fit too.

Selva, I tend to personalize a car to suit my needs/tastes.

what they drop cruise control as well. I don't remember that. but then again would not surprise me if they did I mean it was only on the 7 seat auto on the other GV range and a few auto 5 seaters

Rx-7 wheel might fit I'm not sure on the air bag plug. also depends on what type I know they changed plugs about 97 or I think it might be only S8.

I know you can't fit any of the new ones due to plug differences for the air bag.

IMO - stuff the airbag. but of course well actually on a wagon be hard to tell
some people think the Gv1023 is a airbag, Irong same wheel used in 121 and Eunos 100 ( aka astina SP)
