Easy Defect
The irony is - By conclusion of a the ADR's no Pod filter is legal in ANY STATE. But most states carry the same laws of - it must be securely mounted and most will state it must be enclosed. The 2nd funny thing is the whole _oil -filters are not legal due ot fire risk was a risk more with carby car back in the day. Bakc fire throught the carby. but it's Ironic that the 1st gen is said via the workshop mnaual to be fitted with a factory oil filter ? |

I bought one of those Fram Air Hog pod filters at supercheap, its an oiled type but I've read conflicting info on the oil stuffing up the MAF/AFM. Some people says theirs is stuffed and some say its fine as long as you don't put too much oil on it. Someone here said that some OEM filters for our 1st gens were oiled.
Anyone had any problems with them? I'm thinking of taking it back before I open it. |

WRX's have this problem alot. My mate (who is a mechanic mind you) was stumped at why his car ran like [shizzle], rang up wrx specialist who said ditch the oiled filter, even a little bit can fould up the air flow sensor quickly. Ditched it, worked good. Washed the other filter, reoiled putting only small amount, works fine.

Yeah I heard about the WRX's having problems and Nissans too. Some people say they have no problems with them but a majority do.
I'm thinking of just using a panel filter but I dunno if its worth paying big bucks for the K&N. Are there any other brands that work just as well that don't cost as much? |

If it's a 1st gen - oiled filters are fine
and yes form factory in 1987 it's listed up untill 1991 to be a oiled permigated filter. but original filters are both cototn and paper combo with oil inbetween. NO more are produced unless you can find one from japan. I had one in my car not onyl was it heavy it was really good. As for air-flow meters The K series engines have no mesh in front of the sensor and it's desgin suggest that it would not be a good at getting oil on it. the 1st gen it's only got a air intake temp sensor. it's very very hardy and infact, I've hit them with alsorts of cleaner - no problems. it's the oht wire type air flow meter and the latter MAF that is effected. |

As long as the pods are secured your fine, unless your in one of the states that limit intake mods. Apexi is probably the best apod filter around, especially for ~$100 From my experience it would also be recommended to sort out a heat shield, with a good CAI to it. |

No it's Right there is no WRONG or right about it. It just depends on if your state decideds to enforce the federal law on Australian desgin rules. Fact is Most states have there own - overriding or contradicting laws. Such as EPA, and light virchle modifications. For example IN NSW - the reason you are not allowed to have a Oil air filters . is due to a reverse cycle, on start up. EG a backfire through the intake. Yes it is more common on the Carby type setup. But I've done it on a EFI before. Some state do allow minor changes and yes your are right on the fact that you can have one as long as it's secure mounted. In others it's must be enclosed for noise. But the simple fact is If you break and ADR - you are liable. THe simple fact it's a LAw at a higher state and it can be used against you when required. The irony bewing alot have become redundant. But if you you look them up you find things like. Paking /marker lights can no be any brighter then 7 Watts. It's why many cars don't have ther same headlight setup as in europe. Alot of them have 21 -35 watt daytime driving lights. Headlight height - for example RX-8 S2000 are all non-legal from factory. As always alot are redundant. Now what has this got to do with anything. Well? Let me point this out to anyone travelling to NSW. Just because You don't get one in your state don't mean you can not in ours. ADR - is national. Let me tell you They will use it and have here, ask a few Autosalon entrants from last years final battle cruise. Also a word or warning to think about these things now. I know most people with price of money will soon be thinking less driving. but With more tighter emissions. THe push for newer cars cleaner cars will occur. So EPA will come down harder on offenders. It's already being used here in NSW to - remove the HOONS. But it won't take long before it spreads |

I hope they dont clamp down on emmissions too hard. I like it NSW right now, the chance of you getting done for emmissions related stuff (except the obvious screamer pipe/open wastegate) is slim to none. Unless they want to just throw that on the pile of defects in the pits, but no roadside test will be aiming for emissions testing and it should stay that way

No it's going to occur within the next 7months. Last saturday night got the greeny and cops all stired up. They setup a DUAL BLOCKAGE IN BRIGHTON. and RBT in city so, They moved it all to the city and in Brighton got a few over the pits at the RTA. I understand they will do it very soon in the city. in effect they will have the lot done and if you get picked-up. Expect anything anything suspect to be looked at. The chances of being done for a RTA is slim but more Blue slip inspections are being handed out and I think there price is going up. Yes I know it's only a $59 charge for the paper but the PRICE - IS GOING UP. |

Hey if that blue slip inspection involves you having to actually fix it and not getting a mate to tick it off, it can be very expensive for alot of people.
Lucky I dont drive in the city. Hardly there, and when I am, public transport. $15 worth of tolls, and $20 worth of parking, Ill take the $5 bus ticket(and avoid driving with the hectics in the city at sat night). |

Yeah well
I don't do public transport unless I have too. I can't stand it. I mean seriously I can't handle it too well. I did trains and it's okay mornings not packed but evenings - forget it. my legs after work - nah I preffer the drive. besides it's 20mins by car or whole trip is 1.75hours by train forget that. I don't pay tolls to get into the city anyway. IMO it's cheaper to pay for the parking if one has too. Public transport - AHH the freaks on that sometimes - well I think it's just from my area - the other buses I see always have better looking people - LOL |

Well I have no business in the city during the day so I avoid the public transport rush. But at 4am on after a big night, it is nice to pay the $4 bus ticket and sleep on the way home. I hate public transport as well and will almost always pay alot extra for the luxury of driving, but going out nights at the city (Which hasent happened for a while) busses are the only way I will go.

I just read through this thread quickly.
If you're looking into legalities of a pod filter, they're only legal if they're captured (as in they're not able to bounce around freely in your engine bay) ... however you can hide it pretty well by using your stock box and installing a CAI through it. In relation to the fact that the K&N is oiled isn't a factor as if you actually look at the stock air filter that is provided my Mazda ... guess what, it's oiled too! In any case, do a search on CAI for piping ideas. |
