Help me do a KLZE swap in Ottawa!

Hey guys,

So a select few of you may have heard that I spun a bearing on my KLZE. I have found a new KLZE from LARKEN to swap in, and Richard Biggs has been so gracious enough to provide the driveway space and tools to help me do the swap next week.

We are looking at Wed the 30th, Thurs the 31st & Fri Aug 1st to get the work done, as those are typically my days off. I will also work on it during the day on Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th for prep work.

If you are interested in helping out, please reply here as soon as possible and/or PM me for my phone number & we'll all get together.

Wow... I'm currently helping my brother out with his mr2, as we took out his engine and now are trying to finish up to start my klze swap asap. I'll try to drop by but not sure how much help I'll be able to provide considering my current scheduling. I've been planning on doing my swap since May, which JUST shows you how much time I've actually had to do the swap... we're at the end of July AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

In any case... good luck with the swap!

Important Info; like my Address...

Adding to BShark's post; as the host...

As he said, we're looking at Wednesday, July 30th through Friday, August 1st. The plan is to wrap up the swap by Friday, but if it comes to needing more time over the weekend, we'll keep you posted.

I'll be teleworking from home from 7:00 to 3:00 Wednesay through Friday, so that I'm there to help/socialize/administer-first-aid as required during the days, but extra hands are welcome. I dunno what time BShark plans to wrap up each night, but I've got some proposed ideas below, and you're all welcome to come out and help out anytime, or just watch and heckle.

My Details:

200 Woodroffe Avenue, Ottawa
Cell: 613-850-6102

Wednesday: I'm not opposed to serving up burgers and working right through sundown, pending BShark's schedule. I think our target would be to have the old engine removed so that Thursday can be spent swapping over anything that needs to swap, etc...

Thursday: I won't be around Thursday evening, as I'm helping a friend move; BShark will have to let you know how late he's working. I think, as a target, we'd be aiming to have the engine ready to drop in, with the tranny swapped over, water pump if needed, etc...

Friday: I think the target by Friday is to be dropping in the new engine sometime in the morning, and spend the day hooking it up, filling fluids, etc... Hopefully we're starting it and tuning it by late afternoon.

Friday BBQ: I'm thinking Friday night, why don't we all gather for some BBQ burgers, maybe help tune the car, or hopefully admire the successful three-day engine swap. Bring out your MX6's and we can show off, socialize, eat, drink (lightly if driving, of course) and be merry.

I am kind of obsessive compulsive that way...

As for Thursday, if you're starting at 3:00, then I may work @ work instead, and make sure I'm home before 3:00. And Thursday evening, I don't plan on moving too late, so I will be home around dark anyhow; if you're still working then I'll help you out until we get it done or get too tired.

Though on that note, extra help for BShark on Thursday would be really welcome. Particularly anyone who knows Trannies and flywheels, as I can't help but think that he might be switching his own flywheel over to the new engine.

Okay, just off the phone with LARKEN, he'll be dropping the engine off tomorrow around noon - 1pm. Let's hope it's not raining at that time.

Let this be a piece of info for all:

You need to have a valid license sticker to get your car towed.

What's interesting is that I can't get a renewal sticker until I get an etest. I can't get an etest if the car is not running. I can't get the car running until we drop in a new engine. To drop in the new engine, I need to get it towed to RichardBigg's house. But I can't get it towed if I have no valid sticker. Ridiculous.

I wasn't informed of this until the tow truck came all the way to my house. Stupid CAA. So now I have to wait until tomorrow morning to get a temp license at the DMV.

I guess it's for the best, cuz I had 45 minutes left till work and was covered in dirt and sweaty, so showing up at work like that would not have been a good thing.

I'm guessing that's because you're doing it via CAA... if you were paying full price towing, I'd guess there'd be no problem (other than the outrageous bill)...

Guess this won't help the schedule much; unless you were busy pulling the old engine out while it was at home? Anyway, not sure if I'll have much opportunity to drop by and help; you caught us on a busy week. I'll maybe try to pop by at lunch and at least provide some encouragement, if nothing more constructive.

...plan has changed! Took a shortcut, and bought msequence's beast; now my old girl is being parted, and I get to work on fixing up the new beast!

Day 1: Engine removal

Despite the slight rain at the beginning of the day, we managed to pull out the busted KLZE and do minor maintenance work between the new and old KLZEs.

Thanks to LARKEN for bringing over the new KLZE and providing a helping hand for a while.

Huge thanks to PaulG for sticking it through for the whole day & providing vital assistance, and of course to RichardBiggs for hosting and being a huge help.

I'll post some pics later today of what was done.

Don't suppose anyone's got an arc welder or stick welder around we could borrow?

One of the passenger side engine mount bolts broke, but there's like 3/4" of it sticking out still... So if we could weld a nut on the end of that, I'm thinking we could give another go before we break down and drill it out.

To be determined... There was a snafu...

We broke a bolt in the head removing the water pump. The bolt is that darn one that holds both the passenger side engine mount, and the water pump. A few of the board members showed up and we all worked at it, but we never could get it out.

And now, the real pisser is, eventually we broke the bolt extractor in the bolt too. So now we can't get either out. So now we've got about 3/4" deep of a bolt with 1/2" deep of extractor stuck in the middle of it. We can't grip either, and we can't drill the extractor, it just buggers the drill bits. So I've drilled 1/16" to 3/32" holes almost all the way around the extractor, it still won't come out. It wiggles now, just can't pull it without any grip.

So the long and short... I'm stumped.

Future plans:

Wednesday: 1:00 - 7:00, working on it, hopefully remove bolt, prepare water pump and timing belt to get engine ready to drop.

Thursday: Assuming we can get the bolt out, aim to drop engine in first thing in the morning, and Barun can spend the day hooking up hoses and electrical until early afternoon, when we both have to wrap up.

Friday: Finishing touches, tuning, and hopefully driving it out of my driveway.
