12at box went from October 1982 onwards, ended late 1988 (but there were only 50 or so sold after 1986).

I presumed the 12at was the final revision of this type of gbox?

And I am not saying its strong But I can't see 250fwhp being an issue if your not to hard on it.

hmmmm not too hard on it. how many rota owners drive like that? none i've met. i've seen your vids, dont tell fibs. it wouldnt last if you had that power, and some decent rubber. nor if i had it. interesting, perhaps they just shot peened the guts like the difference between gtx box and gtr? later boxs are supposed to have some ribs on em, that one is smooth. and 82-88 seems to cross the boundry there. if only a few were sold after 86, it would seem that they were supposed to be from the weak generation, but perhaps a reinforced weak generation?

who cares anyway we all know the R type box is the way to go.

is that r type you posted yours?

fred.

I think you will find this particular box was not updated at all during this period. The Cosmo in 12aT form ran from Oct 82 - 88. No development was done to the car post 1984, it was just a cult car and was strung along by enthusiasts and the fact the 4-door piston counterpart was sold into the '90s for use as japanese taxis!

took this one just for evo :

yep, thats more mazda parts being carted around in my nissan skyline :-) i treat it like a ute. the interior is ripped apart. i reckon a 4 door r32 >> r32 ute would be a wickud conversion!! i've seen a vid with an s13 ute, i liked that too. the 4 door skyline would have a longer wheel base though, and therefore more space to chuck stuff.

got myself a driveshaft from a wrecker this morning. same splined end from a b2600 same length drops straight in with the box. they only charged me $90 inc gst. considering a uni joint replacement on the old one would have gone $150 and having a new sliding yoke fitted for the new box would have been $250, i think thats a bloody good deal. they have the ute boxs in stock for around $400 as well. and also clutch lsds at the 350 to 400 mark...

getting closer. when i actually get close, i'll start a freds fe3 into the ute project thread.

They came out ok after a good clean, i'll still be stripping and painting them before installation. also need to replace bearing and seals in the centre idler.

straight jacket fits :

so looking forward to sliding the ute again, the skyline just isnt the same. i can intentionally bounce the skyline off of kurbs for example, a sport i used to rather enjoy in the ute with commercial tyres.

sliding left.... bump... sliding right. good fun i tell you.

try that in the nissan, and you'd bend one or more of many things. or pop the uhp tyres...

theres a distinct lack of action on mx6.com at the moment, i assume summer has arrived for you lot in the US of A. here it is getting colder and wetter. and sliperier ;-) videos to come. i'll have to get busy and make enough progress on my project to share some of it with you bastards.

Yeah, there's just no fun to be had on here at the moment...

At least it means I feel more encouraged to go outside and do things with the Capella, gave it a good thorough scrubbing today. It's shiny again!

just thought i'd throw this in here :

it turns out that the mazda clutch lsds have a camming/locking action to them under load. the layout inside is

clutchs:springs:sidegear and carrier:spider gears:sidegear and carrier:springs:clutchs

so when you apply load the spiders try to force the side gears apart thus applying more pressure to the clutchs :-) and effectively locks it up. the springs just apply a preload to allow enough traction to load it up.

i might chuck some diff photos up here soon.

the type 2 boxes are junk i used to go through one a week in my truck although i had 230kw at the wheels out of my fe3t i got a type three in there now they the same as a 13btwin turbo series 6,7 rx7 gearbox! i heard they were good for 550hp! soon find out i plan to be making 450-500hp at the wheels in my truck from a bored and stroked fe3 running a dissplacment of 2239cc with upto 24psi boost! haha i look forward to the good times!

i wouldnt call them junk. at 230kw, it would be safe to say you are outside of their operating range. most people seem to think 200 to 300 hp is all they are good for, and the fact that nissans smaller box hangs off at most 220 crank hp and is of extremely similar statute attests to that. but certainly the bigger box will be stronger. bear in mind that it only ever had 280hp at the crank in front of it, and that it only weighs 5kg more than the type 2 box and you cant expect too much from it. i nearly bought a toasted one from a seven, but the guy wanted too much. i wouldnt go expecting it to last too long with abuse+500hp+good rubber. any two of the above maybe, but not all three.
