Crankcase ventilation discussion and sort of survey

the options are :

(best) vacuum generated by dry sump pumps or just crankcase evacutator pump
(good) pcv valve to allow engine to draw air in from crank case at idle and open pipe to intake in front of turbo as per stock setup.
(ok) to vents via seperators and filters
(sh|te) just open to the world
(going to blow) closed sealed and about to spit out some seals

have i missed any, and what do you have on yours?

just thinking about what to do after someone from here prompted me about it.

fred.

Twas me, just wondering what people do for motors under higher boost. Like say 20psi for an extended period like on a track day. Is there a oem pcv that can withstand that reliably, or does anyone run a different system to account for the increased pressure?

the valve should hold the pressure (it cant not, the pressure seals it), but the blow by is on its own getting out of there when its constantly at full throttle and not scavenging from the case at all.

I have not thought of that all that much I was thinking of running just the PCV setup although the goal with wiseco pistons and pauter conrods is to run 20+PSI (for drags not 'track days') but i'll keep an eye on this discussion.

Typical install for the vent side- some run a can on the pcv side too.

I'm running a PCV valve with a breather filter on the side of the cam cover. One of these days when i re-do my piping I'd like to have it connected to the turbo inlet but for now it works ok.

I personally like Volvo's ventilation setup. It's got a factory catch can, that just drains the oil back into the sump for re-use.

The mazdaspeed cars have catch cans with drain backs.
I considered it, but after looking at the nasty stuff in the can, I figured I'd rather keep it out of the engine.

oily froth- it's water vapor that condensates in the catch can- blended with some oil... best it can.

I'm running both lines to a catch can. I plan to keep an eye on the can to see what develops. I was pondering the need for a PCV valve myself but decided to just stick with the plan for the moment.

This is an old pic but the set-up remains the same:

fair enough. did you get your oilly froth on the engine that died? or the new one? or both?

odd ball : those lines look really small? i imagine that with the length of them the oil particles would have a hard time making it to the end (probably a good thing unless you formed a hydraulic lock because of it)

Mr. Gasket Crankcase Evacuation System - JEGS
I've been running a hose from the valve cover to a catch can which then goes to one of these welded in the exhaust. It works by using exhaust gases to draw the gasses out.

So would I be correct in thinking that You don't actually need the PCV valve at all. You only need something connected to the breather port with a vacuum to keep out positive crank case pressure?
