I always thought the RF didnt have a cross flow head...
That picture shows inlet and exhaust on opposite sides.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Mo...p-36340006.htm

r2 probably = rf

certainly doesnt look like the mazda engine to me. but i'm not all that familiar with those R series ones. mostly because they suck.

try and find a diesel cappela on trademe. there should be an engine shot there. its probably not worth your time. no one has destroyed a bottom end in that way yet. not even with massive power. but if you want to for massive power, or for the hell of it, go right ahead :-)

I do. (Hopefully, considering the 'fits the FE3' part)

It's from an '87 E2200. The pulley end looks different to the DOHC crank, probably going to need some machining.

nice pics,
I need to find one of those cranks for the other fe3 I am going to build. Looks like the oil pump drive on the crank will need to be machined. Is the gear on the front part of the crank removable? If not I wonder if there is enough material there to machine off and still fit snug in the oil pump.
thanks for the pics!

i dont think so. i had a 626 diesel a while back with the 2.0 diesel engine. this one wasnt crosflow. it had intake and exhaust manifold on the back of the engine ( standing in front ofit) on the front there was the huge dieselpump.

The gear seems to be heat fitted, so I'm not sure if it needs any machining at all, and in the worst case scenario just enough to split the old gear.

Is the gear part of the oil pump arrangement ?

If so it must be different on the R2 as opposed to the RF....I was always under the impression that the oil pump on the RF was the same as the early FE SOHC (or at least on the early model RF).

I though about using the R2 crank, but the 8 bolt flywheel wont work for me as I need it to fit inside an F series gearbox bell for GC.

But there doesnt seem to be any durability issues from members using the F2 cast crank.

ohh I see, so if underneath that gear is the same size as the fe3 oil pump drive, all you would have to do is get the 2 flat sides machined into it.
thanks for the pic.
