School project - Virtual FE3

Hello,
I signed up for an extra course in CAD and today I completed the third and last assignment. What I have left to do to complete the course is a project assignment. I can pick almost anything I want so I picked the FE3 engine.
As you can imagine it won't be exactly correct.
It's more to demonstrate the four stroke combustion.

It would be fun to have atleast some mussurements correct, so if you have any, please feel free to post them in this thread.

I might be nuts for trying this since I only have a month to complete it, but I will give it a week and if it doesnt work I will do the rear or front suspension instead.

The messurements that I have:
Bore: 86mm
Stroke: 85mm
Cylinder volume: 1998cc
Piston height: 36mm

Assumed messurments:
Between cylinders: 10mm
Engine block length: 450mm
Engine block width: 126mm
Engine block height: 170mm

The things I still need messurements for:
Engine block
Engine head
Oilsump
Pistons
Con rods
Valves
Valve springs
Cam shafts

For a start, stroke = 86mm not 85 (bp is 85mm i think)

Secondly, what is a "cam axle" ?

Thirdly, Good Luck!! :-)

Cool project.

Fred.

valve axle? the two long round thingys with bumps which makes the valves open

Thank you

I have the basics down for the engine block. I'm using 10mm between the bores.

If you need any cad help just let me know. I have an Associates degree in cad and design. This will be a fun project for you though. My question is are you doing this in Autocad or Inventor?

Thanks everybody

Yes, it's the camshaft I'm refering to, just had a mental block there :S

It must be a typo in the brochure, but it clearly states 86x85. And it says 86x86 for the 2,0i and 86x94 for the 2,2i12. I will scan it and post it, but it's in swedish. I have the brochures both for the GD series and for the GC and also the brochures for the extra parts.

I'm using Solid edge since that is what we are using in school, but I'll ask you anyway lundgren

I have started on the engine block but it's not pretty, but then again, it's not done.
I will post some pics of it when the project thread is up to date.

Cool, I've been doing a similar thing (in very sedate pace) using CATIA and SolidWorks

I'm missing a proper coordinate table though, so it's quite difficult to get exact distnaces though.

LOL, I love how the valve cover is all in detail and the head is a lump of metal :-)

Nothing worth showing, unfortunately. I've been building a skeleton out of the block and head (a set of dimensions for those unfamiliar with the CAD) and later construct a detailed, accurate geometry.

Nice work on the valve cover The block is an obvious product of pre-CAD/CAM era, and so it's pretty tough to model into geometry. Are you going to release the parts in IGES or STEP format?

I'm still a noob at this, so what is IGES- and STEP-formats?

Yesterday when I was in school I didnt have my work with me, so I started on new solid parts.
The engine block will be an assembly of about 24 pieces. This will make it easier to complete and by doing this I can make an animation of one cylinder to show how the 4-stroke works.

IGES is a data format used to echange data between different CAD systems, very common. STEP is similar, but less popular.
