Perfect timing i am also ready to install a pyromiter. I am considering centered in front of the turbo flange.

I did a search and I am getting mixed results. Some people are saying put it where the runners meet up or some people said put it on the hottest cylinder which I think is #1. It's one of the last things I have to do tommorow before I put the motor in, but I want to make sure I get it in the right spot. also wondering if i should put it in vertical from the top or horizontal from the side.

Number one shouldn't be hotter with the correct gasket arrangement. However, it will probably be 6 or one or half a dozen of the other. Provided it is before the turbo. I would think you will get a hotter reading right next to the cylinder than down the pipe a bit, but that could be subtle. With correct compression/octane/boost/timing/afr you shouldn't even need it.

If you're only running 1 egt, then I'd vote collector. It'll be hard to know if another cylinder gets hotter with it only in one runner. If you have it at the collector you'll have a cumulative temp - if it rises you'll know something is up. I placed mine just prior to the turbine flange primarily because that's a default aircraft location.

I tapped the manifold today. I had to go to home depot and get a 1/4 npt tap. They recommended using a 21/64 drill bit which is near impossible to find in any store so I used a 5/16 and then opened it up a tad with my dremel. The tap worked great, I tapped it a little bit at a time since the pipe thread is tapered. I got it to sit at the perfect depth and it gets nice and snug...
I learned my lesson the first time I used a pipe thread tap. I ran the tap in too far and the trans plug I installed never got tight and just screw in all the way through the trans case... anyway here's a pic...![]() |
