My fe3 swap

well here we go
I should have done this for ever ago guys

I am currently running my fe3 with as much as 15 lbs boost and loving it

here is the motor with a f2t disty stuffed in the hole as I never got a disty with mine
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1753.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1755.JPG

http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1757.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1758.JPG

as I had no disty to mod I went to wasted spark from the get go
here is my modded pulley

http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1762.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1763.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1764.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1765.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1766.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1767.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1768.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1769.JPG
I took a crap load of pics so I will rememeber what I did and what I screwed up for next time but I took a pulley from a 1.9 early 90's escort and
pulled the tooth wheel off the back side they are just press fit on
then layed out 4 holes and then drilled them but they end ended up off by to much on my timing marks so I layed out a second set and drill both the tooth wheel and pulley at the same time it isn't perfect center but it works good

the next batch of pics is from the pulling of the very drity f2t that finally blew a head gasket after 437,000km

http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1771.JPG

http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1777.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1778.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1779.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1781.JPG

at this point I put the camera down or there was no one else
to take pics I don't remember but things make a huge jump
this is the motor in the car

http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1784.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1785.JPG

as you can see my dist block off plate this is seal with some
ultra black and it has been trimmed now to look a little better
at this point it is just bolted here to keep stuff out

http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1786.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1787.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1788.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1789.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1790.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1791.JPG

here you can see I have my coil pack mounted

http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1792.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1793.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1794.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1795.JPG

at this point I was still planning on using the factory harness
and just making a adapter to my mega squirt ecu
which would have been possible but I had all sorts of trouble
and opted to rewire the engine to be sure something had not been damaged
it how ever turned out that the circuit to amplify the out put of my cps
to my mega squirt. MS(v2.2) with a lm324 has some issues with certain pickups and with more teeth it how ever worked great on my modded gt disty running 12-1 with 2 teeth ground out of it thank again for that info compnut21

http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1796.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1797.JPG
yeah I picked up my flanges today
had 3 of them localy laser cut thanks again to this forum for the
dxf file I am not usre who get the credit for it but you guys know who you are
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/m...old.flange.dxf

and the fab on the first manifold that was supposed to be temporary
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1798.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1799.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1800.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/DSCF1801.JPG
I know it looks rough but wait it looks better

and my camera got destroyed shortly there after
so here we go with pics from my new cannon dslr

http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/IMG_0038.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/IMG_0113.JPG
http://www.bobcat.ca/stuff/CAR/fe3/IMG_0116.JPG

so here it is all welded up and wired it runs with no filter at this point
I guess I should take some more recent pics

but here is the info and specs

it is a fe-dohc from what I can glen from the motor and the web it is a 9.2-1 motor

the stock turbo with 3 stages of boost control
under half boot 7lbs like stock half to 3/4 boot 9lbs 3/4 to full boot 15lbs

MS 3.0 (msns-extra) with wasted spark fan control boost control
no 1/4 mile times or dyno runs have been done yet
but it runs hot dam

currently looking for a second block for a whole rebuild while this is fun
I want more

there is a longer build log over on bcpoc.ca
but this should get the general idea

Dude i hate to inform you but with the aluminum cam cover not painted, the intake manifod design and lack of VICS i have to say that you have a 8.8:1 F8-DOHC not the FE3N. This is not to say that it is in any way a bad engine. If you want to know for sure lets take a look under the cam cover and see what intake cam it has. My guess is a F8K1 intake cam.....

yeah I had the very same fear when I got it myself but the cams are the right ones I did paint the valve cover

but it needed a valve cover gasket and I had to know if got ripped or not so it tore it open asap and I have fe3n cams trust me I was very afeard too
as it doesn't seem to have vcis on it

I am rather sure it is a fe3 but I still have my doubts with out yanking the head
I wont be able to know for sure 100% but I am 95% sure that it is a fe3
either way I want to pick up a second block this winter and start a further build
with a complete rebuild and so on so I know exactly what I have

F8's have that stamping too as its the same head casting. Just check the engine number, its easily visible with the engine in the car.

go look at your pic 1787 in your sig link...its on the front of the block, 8.N

My fe3 says 2.0 there...like everyone says, though, not a bad motor, and at least you got the good cams...

wish I had known about the casting numbers back then
and it would explain why this vj11 seems to be doing a fair job on the motor
I had thought it would be some what small for the job
