Air con compresson apparently dead...

Hey,
My aircon in my '89 MX6 Turbo hasn't worked since i bought the car and i was told on initial inspection that one of the lines was split. no worries, got that fixed. they rang me after fixing it today and tell me my compressor is shagged and that its going to cost $1700 to fix...
Anyone else had their compressor crap out? How much did it cost you to have it fixed?
I'm thinking about going a second hand one, and just having a mechanic fit it, the car isnt young and if I go all new the aircon will probably outlive the motor by a decade, and when the motor does go, I'm going to drop something completely different in there...

Thanks for any help!

Pay for the repairs, and take it somewhere else. That is a REALLY high estimate.

Thanks, thats what I thought too. I've made some calls since, and I'm getting between $1000-$1200, and a wrecker/mechanic just quoted me $165 for a second hand compressor and $185 to fit it and regas it...
I think the first place to quote was trying to make a quick buck.

Yep, that was my first thought when I saw that price. Good luck getting it fixed, and I hope it works out well.

Jesus, $1700? you can have a dealer installed after market system (bought and installed) for that price. [fizzle] thats outrageous, and thats done at a dealership of all things.

Price was so high because they wont warranty a new compressor without replacing the receiver/dryer and orifice tube. Not to mention having to retrofit it from R12 to R134a. Although, that price is rediculously high, Id go somewhere else or do all the parts installs yourself and have a shop just charge it and put in leak detection dye.

Guys, MissE is from Australia - $1700AUD = $1500USD = $1532 CAD.

While that's still high, getting a new (unused) compressor for these cars ain't cheap. You can't seem to buy them without the compressor clutch, either. I could see with labor, replacing receiver/drier and such the total would be well over $1000....
