I have a 1993 mx-6 2.0 standard shift. I was wondering. . . I was always told that once you get up to a gear when you are about to stop you whould shift down through all the gears with the clutch in. ex. 50 mph in 5th gear when stopping I floor the clutch while shifting to 4th 3rd 2nd and 1st then dead stop. Is there a use in this or is this just what the person who taught me to drive it always did. Do you have to hit all the gears up and down?
No, you can skip any gears that you want. A lot of the time coming off the highway I'll shift right down from 5th to 2nd for power. Every now and then I'll go from 2nd to 4th also.
"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The man who had nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety is a miserable creature, and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." -John Stuart Mill

Save petrol, save your clutch, save your brakes oh and save petrol .
Original poster, do you mean leave your foot on the clutch the whole time and go down each gear???? Or just gear down.
Technically you should be gearing down and using engine braking, it is what an automatic car would do for you. But if you want to save wear on the car cruising to a stop is best. And in an emergency I did the is it better to stomp on the brakes from 40mph or gear down hard then stomp. It is better to stomp if your brakes and tyres(and ABS) are up for it.
if stopping at the light i just coast in gear, clutch still engaged, and depress the clutch once the cars around 1k rpm. then once the cars stopped, then put it into first. if i need to select 2nd or 3rd before ive stopped thats not a big deal.
other things to note: its totally fine to select gears out of sequence. i dont know where that myth comes from. if youre selecting all the gears before you stop that sounds like a lot of unnecessary synchro use
if youre at higher speeds it may be an idea to double clutch to closer match synchro speeds so they dont have to do so much work.....eg 5th to 3rd. if youre going to be doing that on a regular basis.
but this is all just normal use...any gearbox that cant take that is a sucky gearbox....eg spanish cars
Most times if I'm coming up to a stop I'll shift into 3rd or 2nd, then neutral and coast to a stop. For daily driving I skip gears when I accelerate, i.e., 1st, 3rd, 5th. I never downshift into 1st while moving, unless it's at 5mph or less.

Myth could come from older un-synchronized transmissions... My '54 Chevy couldn't go into 1st gear unless you were completely stopped So you had to go from third to second if you were shifting down while moving haha

well if you have the room to I'd coast in neutral or with your foot on the clutch and than stop when you needed to. using brakes , you can heel toe downshift, this is mostly usefull incase hte light turns green and than you can just pick up from where you were but thats would only be in a perfect situation where you can just pickup and go. I heeltoe stop for the practice in braking and downshifting before I used to know how to do that I would just hit the clutch and ride it out but the problem in coasting is you need to know the car well enough to know which gear you should be at which speed. IE when I was learning I would sometimes shift to high or to low and the RPMs would be to low to pick up or to high and bog the car.
Everything thats dangerous is Fun! But not everything thats fun is dangerous!
when i come to a stop i down shift to a lower gear( like from 4th to 3rd) then mash my brakes to stop than if i need to stop more i down shift again( from 3rd to 2nd) than mash me brakes until um stopped and than put it in neutral until the light turns green. you can also downshift from 4th to 3rd while braking than as you come to a complete stop put it in nuetral and when the light turns green 1st gear is up. this also applys to when you come to a stop sign. just downshift to a the next lowered gear like from 4th to 3rd than brake, once your about to completly stop put it in nuetral. than when your ready to take off start off in first. for the record i almost never use 5th gear accept on the highway. its just basically stop and go traffic where um at!
