prisoners

there are 5 prisoners in a jail....

the guard comes over with a bucket of 25 apples. He says to them, if you can seperate these apples evenly between yourselves, with no cutting of the apples in one hour, but leave one in the basket i will let you out of jail.

One hour later they are released from prison.

How did they do it?

im sure this cant be right but

4 apples per person = 20
4 apples to the guard = 24
1 in the bucket = 25?

the prisoners have to keep the apples (not divide them with teh guard)-close tho.

you are not allowed to eat the apples

5 prisoners, 25 apples, have to have one left in the basket.

Trick question. He brought them in a bucket. Where did the basket come from?
so... they each get 5, one of them has a basket and puts one in there.

and no killing is used either.....

4 guys take 5 apples each. 5 is left the last prisoner takes the other 4, leaves on in the basket but walks out with the basket so he still has 5 but one is in teh basket. Therefore each prisoner has 5 each.
