Excruciating knee pain. Middle of the night.

So, recently (every now and then) i've been waking up in the middle of the night and my legs are bent at a 90* angle or so. This becomes uncomfortable and I go to stretch my legs.

To my surprise, I become fully awake and screaming at the excuciating pain coming from my knees as I go to extend them. I have not a clue what this could be and will get it checked out asap. I think it has something to do with having my legs bent for several hours during sleep and then moving them. But i'm not really sure.

Has anyone heard of this before?

It's the worst pain i've ever felt.

is it a leg cramp? Where is the pain? Hamstring, quads, or the joint itself.

Definitly not a cramp. The pain resides in the joint itself. Right under the knee-cap, I believe. The pain is really too great to determine the exact location, however. But, I do think it's right under the knee-cap.

*Edit* Last night, both of my knees were hurting at the same time. I believe they were both bent. I extended the right one really slow so it didn't hurt as bad. But the left one...oyyy. I couldn't move it at all without the pain being 110% intense. It's the worst pain i've ever felt.

get an MRI exams. seems to me you may have some sinovial fluid leaking out of your knee pockets. It happened to me when I had the motorcycle accident. You will prolly get drained, which is even more painfull than what you are suffering right now. I recomend some stretching exercises, hot towels and snake oil. the oil will help relax the ligaments on your knee, relieve some pressure on the caps.

Good info. But I didn't do anything to my knees that I know of. It just started happening all of a sudden. Maybe twice a week. Keep in mind it's when i'm asleep. It never does it when awake. (Even sitting here for hours lol)

wwell, while your awake, you are moving around, so your knees are stretching, exercising, staying active. when your asleep, your body cools down, muscles relax, that might cause the fluid to leak and cause pain.

other options are chronic arthritis (which i higly doubt you have, how old are you) and restless leg syndrome (RLS). Is a fairly new syndrome discovered, Im not quite educated in it, but seems to me that it may cause firing of your nervous system on your legs, causing tension and cramping of the muscles. may lead to pain.

Also maybe just tear and wear of your ACL or ECL. What do you do for a living?

I just started at UPS as an unloader. I lift / carry / move heavy packages for about 3-4 hours a night. Actualy, I have noticed a slight sharp pain in my knee when getting in and out of the driver seat of the trucks. It's barely there and doesn't really hurt, though.

I was pretty much freezing last night, so I found myself curled up with my legs bent towards me. There was a slight dull pain in my knees, so I went to extend my legs and that's when it killed.

This was probably my 2nd or 3rd time experiencing this. I can't remember if it did this before I started working there, or not.

yeah, its definetivelly either your ACL or ECL or the sinovial fluid pockets on your knee. I suggest you go to your dr ASAP, cause you might end up loosing all movement of your knee dood. And cold weather is gonna make it worst, so try to keep your knees as warm as posible. Get that snake oil and some hot towels at night, it should help ya get by.

Sorry to hear.

So it only happens when you go to stretch the leg/knee not when you bend it? I would think if it was the fluid it would cause pain in both motions not just one.

It could be a range of things some of which have been discussed above. I can however tell you that I know how you feel about waking up with pain. I have slept on my arms in awkward positions which has caused me to wake up with a lot of pain a few times. But I don't see that happening to knees.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Naveen

Edit: Just read the above posts. It is obvious there is some sort of injury to the knee and it could def be due to lifting the heavy objects. A visit to the doc is in order, and don't let him/her tell you "you don't need an MRI". I went without one for a few years because of the doc's advice and it ended up being a torn ligament.

not necesarily. This may sound funny, but if when the knee is stretched it covers the "hole" thats leaking the fluid, the fluid wont necesarily leak. However, when the knee is bent, the hole is exposed and it leaks, causing pain. Im just talking here out of experience. I had my fluid removed after the accident, and it helped me a lot, but pain comes and goes anyway. Let us know how it goes

I'll third the comments that you need to go see a doc and get an MRI pronto, and don't take no for an answer. It would be best if you went to see a sports medicine specialist instead of your regular joe doc.

Knee pain can be one of the most debilitating things ever. Waking up in the middle of the night with knee pain is serious business.

As it turns out, God didn't intend for us to latch our feet to 6 foot long boards, and with 1000+ ski days under my belt I have a little bit of experience with various types of knee pain.

Thanks for the replies.

Keep in mind that it's both knees doing this at the same time. When it does this, I just extend them without force and it kills. Oyy. I'm pretty much broke and I don't get full benefits until after 6 months.

If you don't have any options right now, think very carefully about the way you treat your knees at work. You should tell work about what is going on and get them to note it in your medical file.

I'm sure when they hired you they made you go through training to avoid injuries, but when you are new to a job like that its easy to lose sight of what you are doing to your body. At least for me.
