WTF is an Amplified Exhaust Citiation? (Tucson, AZ)

Ok I just got a phone call from a friend telling me he got pulled over for having an "Other then stock muffler"?!?!?!?

I have been searching but I can not pull up anything in Tucson, AZ or else where about this citation. (Amplified Exhaust)

The sheriff said that having anything other then a stock exhaust is considered amplified.... what they hell does that mean? How many cars have other then stock exhausts? I mean think about it, we have the V8 that have custom exhausts... hell I am sure its safe to say 40% of cars on the road do not have stock exhaust setups. (Maybe lower but you see them every day, they are normal).

How can they start this? I would just like to read some information on this as it seems like complete BS. Esp since all his car has is an CAI and a Muffler. Nothing more. Most of my Mustang friends drown out his car and mine.

Anyone heard of this before? Whats your thoughts, have any links all that fun stuff. Something needs to be done to stop this! Most cops are dicks but with this they will be pulling over everyone who enjoys there cars.... I think its time to just start cutting the mufflers off cop cars.

NZ Police have been enforcing similar stuff for a few years now under the 'boyracer' legislation. Although when they talk about an amplified exhaust, they say it can't be more than 10dB (I think) over factory...

But what the hell defines factory sound? Is the officer supposed to know what exhaust note and volume every car he pulls up is supposed to generate off the shop floor?

pretty common citation actually. my bro got one and he has the stock exhaust (he had a whole on the muffler). I personally call it the "I have nothing on you but ill buttfork you anyway" ticket, acompanied by tail lights, "exeisve modification" (got that one in PR with my old protege) and seatbelt.

why do they constantly have to screw with us? I am sorry but this is profiling not to mention how many of our parents talk about the old days and car etc and yet they screw with us.... I really hate cops.

Just dont buy your typical fireball cannon bazooka muffler.

Thats generally considerd aftermarket.

You can have an aftermarket exhuast, and look stock.

You need to check the dB laws in your area relating to auto emissions. Sounds like Carcey needs to check the NAMBLA Laws on that BoyRacer thing

His is actually really quite.. I kinda like it. As for mine... well headers w/ resonator and muffler... not bad but still loud. Plus the exhaust leaks...

However since he never even rated/gauges his exhaust tone its nothing more then an excuse to pull us over and give us a hard time...

More info needed

What did your friend originally get pulled over for? Police officers don't usually give out those type of tickets unless the person was a jerk-off.

+1million.

Exactly why I went with the setup I did. Stock lookish with better sound and performance minus the hassle.

VA will cite you for having anything not stock as well. So there really isn't anykind of reading necessary. Hence if it looks like a melon shooter expect to be hassled by the man.

I suppose that all the muffler shops in town are going out of buisness as we speak?

Muffler shops do not sell stock exhaust components, they sell cheap replacement stuff, thats why people go there.

And I'm quiet sure as well that there are a few cars out there on the road that have used up every stock part there is to be had, including the exhaust.

I also bet the cops do not sit outside muffler shops and cite each and every owner whos car is now clearly not legal.

I'm sure grandma in the old 72 ford station wagon is not going to be cited for getting new aftermarket mufflers, mid-pipes, and tail-pipes put on after hers rusted to dust.

You have to keep a low profile around places where cops have to pull you over for things like that. But you can bet I would take it to court if I got pulled over and grandma didn't.

Other than stock WTF. Are they saying you have to buy parts (mufflers) from the dealer?

I think it would be fun to go through the police station parking lot and make some cop ticket every vehicle in there with an other than stock muffler.

^^^^Yeah but when they created that law they're aiming to crackdown on 6inch exhaust tips on civics type of crowd. Not just non-OEM stock replacements. The law is open to interpretation how do you think they're going to do that?

What really grinds my gears is that harleys are the loudest things on the road but they never have this sort of problem.

X100000... I really [fizzle]in hate those things, they hurt my ears up close...

Around here, the only reason you could get a ticket is if you lack a functional exhaust system, i.e. a whole in it or a missing muffler.
