So I've done a little Googling but didnt find any real current answers so I'm turning to my trusty MX6 forum.
I'm about to get an apartment and I'm looking at cable services. I've heard that if you pay for just Cable Internet that you end up with Cable TV as well? I understand that you hook up the one cord in the maintenence room and you have basic cable, so I'm assuming that since they HAVE to hook up that wire to get you your internet that you then of course have cable tv.
But.. do they tack anything on to that wire to block tv channels or is this scam a definate thing? A two for one deal would be amazing. Has anyone else done this?
I can use a Y block and hook my cable modem to the same cable my tv is hooked to. Done it a few times. My cable source comes from one place and branchs off through out my house, I can use any outlet.
So id say yes, it uses the same cable.
However. You have to pay for cable, and the cable internet.
My gf parents have a somewhat free internet at their apartments. They have to pay a small fee of like 10 dollars i think but they have basic cable which is like 80 somethin channels and cable internet that is routed through the apartment community.
I guess it goes out like twice a week or somethin rediculous from what her mom says. I know my friend's apartment had it but it was wireless so he didn't have to opt to get it, he just bought a wireless card and there popped up the office's router. Been using it for like 2 years now. Just kinda depends on where you move too i guess.
and yea it uses the same cable cause thats what i did at home. I had a splitter for my tv and computer, changed rooms, ....even at my old apartment i just kinda picked a room and split it. I had to pay about 57 a month for it. I think i got basic cable with the package but i had my dish hooked up so i never really checked.
Pick_Arse that looks intriguing... What all do you get for channels with that? I read the faq but I want a real review. Tough to set up? Cost? Do channels come and go frequently?
And for everyone else I should add that no matter where I go I neeeeeeed my interweb. Since I'm getting cable regardless (fastest I can get for the price) I was just wondering if TV channels would come up as a bonus when only paying for cable internet.
Where I live, our cable providers provide strictly cable internet, or internet + cable TV.
But I say screw cable TV, get the fastest connection you can afford, a 300+Gig hard drive, and one of these.
The fastest bit-torrent download speed I've pulled is 434 k per second. But I don't know if you yanks can get speeds like that. *chuckles* Even with 1/3 of that speed, downloading your favorite cable shows is a snap.
Anyone without cable TV seen episode 1 of season 19 of The Simpsons yet? heh heh.

You should get basic cable with cable internet as the signal is between channels 75-78 or something. They can block it as my old county's comcast did, but mostly don't like my current county's comcast hooks me

Well, being that I work as an installer for the largest cable internet provider in the country I can tell you that if cable internet is installed correctly then the installer will put a "data filter" on the line either at the pole if you live at a house or in the secured lockbox where the cable for an apartment is located. The filter blocks all channels 2-78. If you want cheap cable and you have comcast just ask for "limited cable". It is only $14 p/mo. It will give you channels 2-29 and 74-99. I'm assuming that remains close to the same nationwide. You get the local channels ie. abc, nbc, cbs, fox, WB or whatever it's called now ect... but not channels like BET, MTV, CNN, Animal Planet ect..
*edit* stories you hear from people who've gotten free cable when subscribing to internet only service had installers who didn't do their job right.

Thank you. That happens to be the exact info I'm looking for! Another question I have for you is about digital cable. Is there a filter that blocks out those channels until you pay for digital services? Or is the box something that is registered with the cable company?
I found the cable box that is in my parents house on ebay for fairly cheap, and Im wondering if I can hook it up to a cable line that isnt subscribed to digital services and still get the extra channels?
An ebay cable box is a stolen digital box. I highly recommend you do not use it as it is programmed to 'seek' out and connect to the cable company to determine it's digital programming package. In your case it is probably flagged with the cable company as a stolen box. Regardless, digital boxes have to be on a customers account with the proper codes for the box to work. The codes on a customers account are what dictate to the digital box which channels it decodes. If it does not find it's account and codes it will not give you anything.
