Look at the slope of the two diagonal lines making the hypotenuse. The slopes are not even. So in the original configuration they make a concave angle, and in the second configuration they make a convex angle (thereby increasing the overall area of the shape by 1 cube).

hypotenuse is the side of the trinagle opposite the 90* angle. I think it can be more than just that, but I haven't had to apply a vast amount of trig since physics a year ago, and AutoCAD pretty much does all the work for me at work. Isn't it nice to know how dependant on computers we all are.
