The price of scrap metal is at an all time high. It was $250 / ton last week. Scrap guys are buying and rounding up all the cheap cars and parts they can find and taking them to the scrap yard.
China is buying all the steel it can get and pushing the price of steel through the roof !
Ive got a rusty mx3 that should bring almost $300
heh- a couple of my coworkers and I toss all our water pumps, rad/condensers, and converters in a big pile- and cash them in usually about once a month, split the earnings and buy some beer at the local watering hole. Usually about $30.
In this last month, we got two five gal. buckets going full of wp's, 2 condensers, and the converters. got us $115, and I just threw 2 more converters in the pile today. I will probably have to call for a ride home this time

^^^ You do know that you can get decent money for cat converters right?
Yeah.. we ended up getting like $17/ea or something like that.
I could take them in myself- but why? what's better than throwing it into a slush fund with your friends and drinking it all away

Stop selling your cat's to crooks, Import cats are worth more then that, first and second gen MX6 cats are worth at least 230$/ea, BMW cats (large) are worth 350$ each and so on. The non imports or Jobber (after markets) are worth much less.
What's wrong with throwing it in a slush fund .....
Nothing if you sell it all for what it's worth, instead of a few beers you could have diner and all you can drink instead.
We have a couple metal collectors that stop by our shops, VULCHERS I call them, they will try and grab anything thats not tied down, they act like they are doing you a favor and if they grab something they weren't supposed to, once they've put it in there truck they don't want to give it back.... I will kick there ass if they come anywhere near my shop (preemptive defense).
The best thing to do is get a scrap or parts car, strip it and park it outside, fill it with brake disks, old pumps, useless blocks... anything thats junk metal and when it's full have it towed to the metal recycles/bakers and sell it for weight, pay the towing fee out of the profit.
Sell your dead batteries, rads and other aluminums, catalytic converters separately. Here they fetch: 8$ per battery, 16$ per rad and 50$-350$+- for cats.
I sold 20 1st gen cat's a few months ago, I search a bit and haggled with the Vulchure but didn't shop around, he paid me 150$ each and crewed me out of 70$ each at the time (1400$ I lost). There are 10 shops in the same building as mine, the ass clown was paying the other shops even less then me, I informed them all of the actual value and we have since canceled his ass from buying any cats from our building.

Larry I know what your talking about, all the local wreckers are going nut's, 60 000$ a crushed truck load to the bakers, there scrapping everything in site and Rob, who's useless talent of buying and dragging junk back to the shop is finally paying off (or useful), unfortunately the hysteria for metal is so bad that the last three car purchases he lined up where stolen out from under him buy tow truck drivers that wander the country side looking for scrap metal cars in peoples yards they can purchase.
We pay 200$ for them right now, keep the battery's, tires and cats to sell later (350$ on average) and sell the car to scrap for more then we payed.
Wait a minute, you guys are saying that the mx6 in my back yard thats almost completely stripped can be scrapped for metal and i'll make a little money off it? How do i do this?
Looks like that pile of brake rotors and exhaust manifolds will be worth more if I hang onto them for another year longer as the price goes even higher...
Downside of all this, the days of getting cheap parts for 20 year old cars from the wreckers/junkyards might be just about over.
84 626 sedan FE SOHC turbo, FE3 on hold, Toyota E58 conversion under way.
89 626 5 door F2T now with VF34 and MFactory LSD now parting out
90 323 sedan B6 SOHC Slug-o-matic DD, sold...too slow
84 626 sedan RF diesel, a slug but you get 6.0L/100km (39MPG)
News to me.. I'm half tempted to raise the BS flag. I've never had anyone pay $200 for any cat, unless new. I did check with the guy that turned them in, and we got $22/cat- not 17.
