Bowhunting
Me and my mate are about to get into it. Despite me coming across as very anit-gun Ive done a fair bit of gun hunting before in Turkey and have played with a fibreglass bow at school camp etc, was fairly decent at it. Planning on shooting some small feral's, rabbits and foxes and maybe move up to pigs if we get any serious at it. Any advice anyone can give?
Still deciding whether to go with a recurve or a compound, trip to archery store tomorow should get me some more tips. I would just go get a .22 rifle or something, but gun laws in Australia are pretty tight and it costs money and effort(and that is how it should be ). Bow's are not legistlated at all however. |

I like a re curve myself. It really comes down to personal preference really, and I prefer the more primitive feel of a re curve over a modern day compound bow. The only downside is the lack of let-off and generally less powerful; most are under 60 lbs.

For hunting, go compound with at least 80 pounds behind it.
They are more accurate and powerfull and thus result in less trauma to the animal. I have seen a through-and through arrow on a Buffalo! From around 30-40ft. Just do a [shizzle]load of practice before going out on the hunt and always practice with the arrows you intend hunting with. A broadhead flies very different to a target arrow due to projectories and weights etc. The Hoyt brand is a good name to go with. |

I was into bow's hunting for a long time. I did comp shoots as well. infact my buddy was picked to be on team usa to shoot for them. his dad passed away shortly after and he did not go
but I loved it! if you want a good bow hoyat (sp) makes very good bows. what you need to do is go to a shop, look around see what you like, what feels good. then you need to find the right weight for you. not everyone can pull 80 lbs over and over and over. so you need to find the right weight for you. once you get into it you will find all sorts of fun things you can do. hell they sell fishing add on's so you can shoot fish and pull them in go to the range often and get good before you go out and hope to shoot things. if you want to know anything feel free to ask me man. I was pretty good in my day. |

Im pretty set on getting a recurve. For the traditional feel and for the price. My budget gets a decent hunting recurve but a piss poor compound. Going for a 45-60 weight takedown recurve. Im only after rabbits, foxes and maybe pigs. The goats and deer I will leave alone.
Sorry King you cant kill Dingoes they are protected animals I believe. Rabbits and foxes on the other hand are pests. I will keep an eye out for those brands. Im pretty sure I am going to buy from the states and ship down here, rediculous markup. I went into a shop today to get a feel and im pretty happy with what I want now. Shop I went into today wanted $300 for a [shizzle]ty Korean No name 30 pounder. There compounds were nice but way out of price. I think I might get a PSE brand recurve. They seem very good quality for the price. 02kyle I will ask you dont worry about that .This seems like a decent buy for a PSE compound. Look like im picking up a PSE Deerhunter. They sell for $220 and so far one company has emailed back and gave me a shipping quote for $80 for two PSE's. So $520US so far is best. It will come down to who can get best shipping quote I guess.

Ok bump this because I need help.
The PSE Deerhunter looks like the one I am going to buy. Getting it for $200 each + delivery. Any objection to this? From what I have been reading they are seen as a very decent starter bow. I dont want to spend $600 or so. It will have a 55lb weight which should be enough for all Australian game with a decent broadhead. What is the consensus from the bow hunting boys???? |

I dont personally know the PSE Deerhunter.
However, the price is such that it would not be a grave error if it turns out crap. Also, it is a better idea to start out cheaper and see what you like/dislike about the bow. That way, when you really get "into" the sport, you will want to upgrade and then you will know exactly what you want and why. I think you are doing this right... for what it's worth. |

Thanks davaro that is the kind of encouragment I need. I figure the $200 bow should do me fine for a year or so and if I like it I will get something more pricey(and heavier weight)
. Cheers |

I Love my 35 pound Browning Wasp recurve. It's alot of fun to shoot with some wooden arrows I picked up at a Gun show. The only bad thing about wooden arrows is when you buy a dozen, only 6-8 of them end up being true so that drives the cost of them up. Unfortunately, the ones I have are slightly short for my draw length, which the bow is rated at 45 pounds at.

And arrows are expensive as too. At least you can reuse them unlike bullets(if you can find it) but bullets arent $8 each!!!
