the problem is not the style(s) of music, its how mediocre the musicians are that make it. unfortunately the music industry for some time now has had a preference for very mediocre players, as the music seems to sell, and thats all that matters in the business side of music. i dont know why, i wish i did, but im not a sociologist. just a musician.
and lol at that hummer, i thought it was a matchbox model car or something at first, it would be cool if i was 5 years old |

it's not good, it was riding on the coat tails of crank dat, which, like the macarena, was just a phase. It's unfair to say all rap is bad, the fact is opinions are like rap careers, everyone has one. For every 10 rappers that make it, only 1 or 2 have real talent. If any of you have ever heard rappers freestyle, it takes a lot of talent, and people like fabolous and the aforementioned lil wayne are good at it. Granted, the golden age of rap is over (early to mid 90s). I don't believe that any song will ever again be as timeless and move crowds like Juicy or California Love. Fact is, it is an entire genre fueled by frustration and a feeling of disenfranchisement, and is meant to share feelings with others that cannot be shared in any other way. Just listen to The Message by Grandmaster Flash. Songs like rappers delight and juicy bring back memories of familiar situations, and it is meant to appeal to a certain class of people.
"Broken glass everywhere, people pissing on the stairs, you know they just don't care. I can't take the smell, can't take the noise, got no money to move out I guess I got no choice. Rats in the front room, roaches in the back, junkies in the alley with the baseball bat. I tried to get away but I couldn't get far cuz a man with a tow truck repossessed my car. Don't push me because I'm close to the edge, I'm trying not to lose my head" Those are the kind of lyrics that I respect as true rap, and songs these days portray and image or luxury and extravagant living that many people in the target demographic cannot relate to. It is this mix of coming from nothing to having a lot that makes people not able to relate to new songs. Listening to The Message or the words to Juicy can evoke memories for people just like Paradise by the Dashboard Lights can evoke memories for other people. That is what music so good. After my car accident I became a Kanye West fan because I could relate to songs on his college dropout album. Many of you who already posted here can relate to lines from my favorite song on that album, Never Let Me Down: "Now niggas can't make it to ballots to choose leadership, but we can make it to Jacob's and to the dealership. Thats why I hear new music and I just don't be feelin it...but in a land where niggas praise Yukon's and getting paid, it's gon' take a lot more than coupons to get us saved." |

I agree with wytenoyz on all accounts.
To add to that I must say that there are plenty of talented rappers out there with relevant and powerful lyrics. They just do not get the air time that commercial rappers get. The reason is that somewhere along the line the roles of the radio stations and the record labels switched. Now in order to get your music played on the radio your label has to pay the station large sums of money for a certain number of plays per hour/day/ etc. So naturally, the people you hear on the radio have the largest labels backing them. And just in case anyone was wondering why they go to the store and see a horrible new artist's cd's are almost sold out the first day - and you're left wondering how did they ever go platinum? Well, they didn't technically. The record label purchases the CDs back in mass amounts to give the appearance that the artist is 'hot'. Then within the next day or two the store will be fully stocked with this "new young talent's" album again. Supply and demand. Here are some of the most hard hitting politically charged lyrics I've heard in a while from one of my favorite rappers MF DOOM (the second half is obviously about the war in Iraq): "Wreak havoc, beep beep it's mad traffic Sleek and lavish people speaking leaking to the maverick He see as just another felony drug arrest Any day could be the one he pick the wrong thug to test Slug through the vest... Shot in the street For pulling heat on a father whose baby's gotta eat And when they get hungry, it ain't [shizzle] funny Paid to interfere with how a brother get his money Now, who's the real thugs, killers and gangsters? Set the revolution, let the things bust and thank us When the smoke clear, you can see the sky again There will be the chopped off heads of leviathan My friend, they call 'em strangers Everybody talk to him end up in some danger They pray four times a day, they pray five Whose ways is strange when it's time to survive? Some will go of they own free will to die Others take them with you when they blow sky high What's the difference? All you get is lost children While abortion [shizzle] up behind the desk it costs billions To blast humans in half, into calves and arms Only one side is allowed to have bombs It's like making a soldier drop his weapon Shooting him, and telling him to get to steppin' Obviously, they came to portion of his fortune Sounds to me like that old robbery/extortion..." DOOM promotes himself as the "The best rapper with no chain you ever heard", I agree Last edited by AntiBoostGT : 5-17-08 at 12:41. |

I used to love rap.
Now I hate it, I cant stand listening to it. I cant stand calling people and they have the ringer set to some rap song.. I want to hang up. Normally a rock fan, hell ill even listen to country.. Id rather listen to oldies then listen to rap. It gets hard listening to something I cannot relate to. |

I'm a died in the wool rock, metal, and punk kind of guy... but I gotta say - there's a lot more creativity IMO in the rap world...
the problem is, because of how pervasive it is, and because of the types of songs that get radio play (typically just mass consumerism songs.. instead of honest introspective looks at life, etc) that there's a crap ton of BAD stuff out there.. but the bad stuff is what takes on the face of rap as a whole... but good rap is a whole lot more honest than most rock and over-the top drama "woe is me, i'll eat your firstborn" metal. and this is coming from someone who is about as hard rock as it comes. |

todays rap = todays "rock", i.e. Lil Wayne, Soldier Boy, and whatever other lil' names and random quotations they adquire as names are the exact comercialistic (sp?) equivalent of Simple Plan, Panic at the Disco, Bullet fo my valentine, death cab for cutie, and whatever 13-year-old, mommy wont give me the minivan to go to the movies, uncomformist but Im only 17 so I got no voice, I buy stocks at Hot Topics bands have come about in the past years. Personally, I think "modern rock" kinda died in the early 1999. This new millenium is going to be remebered as the "talent in a can" era of our music.

i guess you haven't really paid any attention to some of the metal bands that have gained popularity in the last 5+ years. no, not "rock" bands like ones you mentioned(which are more bubble gum rock than anything), real rock/metal bands. i miss the days of 2-Pac and Biggie |

almost all rap nowadays is crap. especially that one song, i forget the title, but it literally repeats the same verse for 90% of the song. I think it was "my drink and my two step" WTF!
if you want good rap look up fort minor, or flipsyde here's a link or two: http://youtube.com/watch?v=R11ZPBDLvVA&feature=related YouTube - US History - Flipsyde don't listen to the 2nd one if u don't like the actual history of the U.S. |

Honestly NAS was right when he said HIP HOP(rap) is dead, I use to listen to that like 90% of the time. Now i find my self making my own cds because all the new music on the radio is just so garbage and predictable case and point: When souja boy came out i told my girl he his trash and i bet his next single will be some wanna be gangsta rap or some soft girly stuff then boom he comes out with Souja Girl. And i agree with Whitenoyz. Everything is so commercialized now u have to have a dance or say the same thing someone else said, then when someone comes around and speaks the truth or actually can rhyme they laugh at them its just crazy man.
"Lil' Wayne, Lil Weezy, Weezy, Weezy F Baby -- all the same person dude. lol." ^^ I think he meant Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy |
