Have you ever thought of taking a gun safety course? You can apply the same priciple to your car really. I'm just saying if that fear is the only thing holding you back you can shoot with an instructor so that you can become comfortable with guns.

The sks will cost a little less than a ak-47 but both guns look like hell and I don't think that I would have either one. I do think from what I know that both guns are reliable and you should get a fair amount of life from either one of them. On your ammo , there is a thought that steel case ammo( like wolf ammo ) is bad for your gun so you may want to try different kinds of ammo and not use steel case all the time.

If there are laws that are recently been put into effect, I have not heard of them so they must not be very major. Major in the eyes of a shooter whos sport has been restricted maybe, but not in the big scheme like the 1996 laws were. Either way ill repeat.

Massacres in the States, 1 every year almost.
massacres in Australia, none.

The fact that we have so much gun related crime in the States has nothing to do with the gun laws. The key word in "gun laws" is LAW. Fact of the matter is, most criminals that own a gun and use it for crime obtained it illegally in the first place. What would changing the gun laws do? Take away the right to bear arms from mentally competent, law abiding US Citizens, while the criminals can still obtain guns any day of the week? Just because you change the gun laws, or the way that law abiding citizens can obtain guns isnt going to take away all the guns in the country. All you're doing is taking away the right for a law abiding citizen to defend themselves.

Dont blame the high crime rate in the US on our gun laws. That has nothing to do with it.

I do not blame the high crime rate on guns, that would be stupid. I blame the high DEATH and MURDER rate on guns. Most guns that criminals have used to be legitimately owned guns because they are so easy to buy and get stolen.

Did you read anything I wrote? About keeping the guns under lock and key when not in use, about restricting the amount of guns that get bought and just sit there "just in case". Hey Chris, have any Rebel soldiers raided your house lately that you needed an assualt rifle to defend yourself?

Most shootings are in the family, not house intruders. Accidents and domestic violence. The other killings, [fizzle] heads who go crazy and buy a gun then 1 week go on a rampage at universties, because they are so easy to get your hands on. There is no point trying to say anything to you, because you obviously did not read what I wrote as you are spewing the same cliche excuses. I dont think less of you because you disagree, I think less of you because you cant come up with an excuse that hasnt been said a million times already and what an 8 year old could come up with.

okay guys, sorry i haven't "chimed in" in awhile, i was doing some maint. on my computer.

back to the topic.

i'm still leaning towards the sks over the ak47. i appreciate all the "helpful" opinions you guys left. as far as it not looking good, that is easily remedied by replacing the wooden furniture with a polymer stock(which i plan on doing, as well as replacing the stock 10 round clip for a 30 rounder).

as far as being a hillbilly and not really needing the gun...thats just wrong. i'm by no means a hillbilly and yeah, criminals will find ways of having guns no matter the laws in affect, so, i want to obtain what i can before it becomes against the law. if they do outlaw these types of guns, then only criminals will have them and i'd like to be able to protect myself. this won't be the end of my collection by far. it may piss you "none gun" types off, but i'd like to have a gun store in my spare bedroom.

i'll end up with an ak47, an ar15, and just about anything else i can find for the right price.

I wouldn't put the M4 stock on yours if thats what youre thinking about doing. M4 stocks on anything but an M4 style AR-15=fail. Just my opinion. You may like them, but I think theyre pointless on a weapon that is that big, and not meant to be carried with a 3 point sling.

I still want an H&K MP5. Ill never own one at $20,000 a piece, but I would love to have one. To the threadstarter: If you're thinking about buying an AR eventually, you may want to consider it before its too late. They just had an article in a magazine that stated that pretty soon, when they push for another AWB (Assault Weapons Ban) only rifles made prior to that date will be considered okay to own, much like how the ban on NFA weapons works. That will mean that any Assault Rifle made after the date of the ban will be restricted to government and law enforcement use only, which will make the price of older rifles sky rocket.
