Need a new Bicylce:)
k so i was riding my bike today and all of a sudden pop off comes the rear brake its dead i also have problems with the gears and shifter... so im in the market for a good CHEAP bicylce im not looking to purchase for at least 2-3 weeks so im not in any need it now problem.
im looking for a 24-26 inch bike mountain bike i guess i ride it on the street only but i dont want a race-type bike. something that is durable(i weight about 200-210 right now and want something that can handle my weight) less than $200 if possible dont care how many gears 15, 18, 21 idk i dont care about seat comfort i dont sit down (my fat ass doesnt look to good siting on a tiny bike seat lol) i dont care about shocks and suspension never owned a bike with them so if i cant get one in my price range it doesnt bother me i ride it like 2-3 miles to a local college campus to work out (trying to lose all that extra weight and trying to get back to like 180 ) then ride home there are uphill sections both waysi had my old bike for like uh almost 10 years i think so i want something that will last through riding on and off road. shift well and not really have any issues ![]() if anyone knows of anything, can give reviews that would be great Last edited by Looby : 6-12-08 at 0:12. All the advice I can really say is stay away from any brand of bike that you would find at a Walmart type store. It may be cheaper, but those brands are crap. You might be better off if you can just raise your limit by about $50 - $100 or so and spend around $300. Go to a local bike shop and they'll probably have some bikes on clearance for a good deal. If you are riding on roads only, don't be afraid of getting a road bike just because of your opinion of them. They are designed for pavement and easier to use on it. If you mix it up, think of something like a comfort bike that is smooth on roads, but can also be used on gravel/mud. The brands I like to stick to (that can be had for relatively cheap) are Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, Giant, and Gary Fisher bikes.

Dont bother buying new. Ive watched craigslist for deals, as well as yard sales. If your primary use is on the road, I would go with a hybrid. It will have thinner tires so less work for you. I use primarily road bikes, but I can understand why you wouldnt want one.
Ive never spent more than 100 on a bike, most required a little fixing up but I'm sure you could do that. I'll look and see if I see any deals for ya. edit: how tall are you? 90'S STEEL TREK HYBRID(GREAT COMUTER BIKE) |

As said don't buy a bike from walmart.
I just baught myself a new bike 3 weeks ago to save some miles on my vehicles, and gas. I ended up going to Dick's and getting a Diamondback Responce XE. Got it for 320 out the door. Thats with the 3 year unlimited warrenty that covers everything on the bike but tubes and tires. I can run the frame over bring it in and they will give me a new bike. Heres Mine ![]() ![]() I know some don't like to spend allot, but I see this as somthing ill use alot and for a long time. Along with that I wanted somthing that could take a beeting. Oh ya Disk Brakes are sweet. |

I'm not sure on that particular bike, but mine's got hydraulic disc brakes. It's a pain in the ass when you want to take one of the wheels off though, way easier on a bike with traditional brakes. They work just like a car brake. Looby, they make different sized frames. You can get a 26" bike with a small frame if you have short legs. Something along the lines of a trek 7000 seems like it would be good for what you want. The tires are good for pavement as well as light trails. I'm not sure what the models are on other brands, but they'll likely have a similar bike. Really, they best way to get a bike is to go to a local bike shop. Most of them are really there to help rather than to sell the most expensive bike they can. They'll usually have people that actually know what they're talking about, and usually offer free lifetime tune-ups for the bikes, plus, they'll let you take test drives. Even if you don't see anything you want for the price, you can get an idea of what you want, maybe a used model of what they had.

Mine are actually mechanical disk brakes. My calipers have a lever on them which spreads the pads apart when I need to take the wheel off or put it on. Its no harder than my other bike with V-brakes. I rode a 50 ft endo last night, getting pretty good with the control of them..Thing is light as a feather to, it weighs far far less than any BMX bike they had there, I was quite surprised how far MB technology has come.
As far as buying a bike from Dick's it was great. Me buying a bike from any Dicks would be determined by who the bike tech is and what he knows. The bike tech at my Dicks happens to know just about everything when it comes to bikes so I was farely happy. I paid a little extra for the warrenty but it was well worth it. He told me I could basically throw it off a cliff in 2 years come back and they will replace the entire bike with a new one, no questions. The guy is even going to install my new bash gaurd and front fork when I get it under the warrenty, so I don't have to pay any labor fees for aftermarket parts I want on, he is a cool guy. Hey, 1st gen. You sure that is the bike you got for 320? I figured anything with marzocchi suspension would run a lot more than that. I'm looking at bikes now and I thought those guys were quite near the top? Right around Fox type suspension. Maybe I've got the names mixed up though.
But this thread is incredibly helpful. I'm trying to find a nice/decent bike right now. So I say thanks to all the suggestions, even though they weren't aimed at me |

Marzocchi is on the top end. On a bike I built, the fork alone was about $400, and that was discounted from MSRP quite a bit. Deals are out there, but it sounds like you found a great one.

Ya Im happy with the deal I got. In all reality though its just a entry level mountain bike. This sport is freaking expensive for what it is..Great work out though..I've enjoyed it quite a bit, well worth the investment.
