xp install (re) help a brother out

ok well the comp crashed so I went to reinstall xp on it. and when I go to do so and it asks for the product key it tells me this... "The Product Key used to install Windows is invalid. Please contact your system administrator or retailer immediately to obtain a valid Product Key." now this copy is from a friend of mine who is a comp smart ass. he has had his own company since he was 16, but the issue is I am working on it now and he is passed out lol. soooooo if anyone has a idea of what to do, if I can use another key # or something fill me in. I am at work right now and I would like to have a comp when I go home. help a brother out.

That depends on whether it's a volume license copy, an OEM copy, or a retail copy of XP. There are different sets of license keys for the different versions.

And if it's an illegitimate hacked copy, you're on your own.
