Next Gen Mazda RX-8 May Get Twin-Spark Direct-Injection Rotary Engine
It appears as though Mazda will offer its RX-8 sports car with a rotary engine in the future and as the all-new second generation model is just around the corner, the Japanese automaker has been busy making improvements to the pistonless wonder.
Last October Mazda filed for a patent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a new twin-spark, direct-injection rotary engine, which was approved last month.
According to the patent it's possible the new motor will be of a slightly larger displacement and we expect a little extra power. The new twin-spark direct-injection system should also help in the power department, although its main benefit will be in terms of fuel-economy.
Twin spark!!! OMG!!! Oh wait...they mean leading and trailing plugs...like they have always had.
The larger displacement is good news...IDK about direct injection on a rotary though....I guess less fuel sticking to the runners is always good...less need to tune any kind of wall wetting algorithm.

Lets not forget about the reduced chance for detonation by injecting into the compressing chamber. Direct injection is even more beneficial on a rotary than on a reciprocating engine.
I also remember reading that the engine's intermediate housings are constructed of aluminum as opposed to using cast iron side housings which are HEAVY. The reduced weight and improved heat-transfer capabilities of the engine should enable a more aggressive tune as well.

The predecessor to the 10A called the 0810 (I think this was fitted to the cosmo of 1967) had alloy side housings. Mazda had some durability problems with them and so replaced them with Iron. with the improvements in metallurgy they can probably work with alloy side housings now.

I had my 3 in for some work today (warranty FTW!) and I was checking out/drooling on/sitting in and pushing buttons/acting like I was driving an rx-8 r3 they had in their showroom.
The seats are absolutely amazing. Recaro nailed that one. They are so comfortable but still supportive and tight.
The wheels look even better in person. It's a shame they only come in 19's or I'd get a set for the 3.
