I recently swapped a KLZE into a 93 mx6 ls which already had a ZE in it that was no good. I put everything in correctly and last night I got the timing set just right, just the way HAYNES told me to.
The fella I bought it broken from said he had the ecu chipped and I would like to find out more about it. The problem is he is very hard to get on the phone and I don't know anything about electronics. I have lots and lots of questions that need answering so if someone could help me out it would be awesome. I also have headers, intake, 2 1/4 inch exhaust and I'm about to put a Dynomax ST muffler to quiet it down from the straight pipe setup that was on it when I bought it.
1. Is there anything available that will allow you to control and change the points at which the VRIS will open and close whenever you want?
2. What all do I need to do to make sure all the power is being put to the ground?
3. What does a chip affect other than VRIS points?
4. Are all chips the same?
5. Is an AFPR mandatory for maximum output with the setup I described above? Or would I have to upgrade my injectors for an AFPR to be necessary?
1. No real point changing the VRIS points, as they work pretty damn well where they are, its based on the varying resonance frequancys as you go through the rev range, not like a vtec which is a cam change.
2. To get all power to the ground, need good suspension, firm up the rear to stop it falling over backwards when you accellerate, put new bushes in the front control arms, and if your made of money, lsd
3. most chips effect the fuel maps and ignition timing of the motor, and most will remove the 180kph speed limiter
4. the cheap chips off ebay do very little, probator chip is one of the best for the klze
5. stock FPR will be fine for your limited mods. if you were rebuilding the motor to take massive compression, or if you turbo you would do it, but since your not going that far beyond stock power with those mods your stock fpr will be more than fine
1993 626 KL-ZE, i swear its stock officer...
From SAE 920677... "LONG LIFE AND MAINTENANCE-FREE - Efforts were made to extend the life of these engines and make them as maintenance-free as possible so that customers can be pleased with the vehicle's quality long after the initial driving period."
1. yes there is. get a chip from probinator or stoker100 or you can even get msd window switches
2. make sure your car is in good working order. you have the bolt ons to support it. good clutch, lightened flywheel wouldn't hurt, good tires. solid motor mounts also help. good suspension, etc.
3. ask stoker100. fuel air ratios, vris points, etc.
4. ONLY chips out there are probinator, stoker100, and xtremethings sells a chipped ecu, but don't know what eprom they use. the chips also get rid of the CEL you'll get from an egr not connected.
5. afpr is a good idea as some people like to run a little higher psi on a klze. also there's a air/fuel ratio problem with the Ze running rich and the afpr is a "fix" as stoker100 will tell you
if you want FULL potential, get a megasquirt unit and tune your car
Also noticed since you're a 93, if you don't have an extra coolant fan sensor in your new ZE, you'll have fan control problems. also, the probinator chip is more for the 94 and up ecu's unless you want to do some fancy wiring, or get a true kl31 ecu in order to get your fans working correctly. yes i've already gone through all of this. there are plenty of threads on this topic, one of which tells you how to wire things

i actually have a probinator chip that I could sell you. it's for a 94+ ecu. if you put it in a 93 ecu, you'll have fan problems. pm me for details. i've had it for awhile but i'm using a different ecu now

How much money? I have all that stuff except the IM, which was broken from shipping. So was the power steering pump, the timing cover, jap disty cap, water/coolant inlet, and above all but the IM, the cam gears were broken. But I do have heads and cams that are good. I think my new ZE took a nice roll across the shipping container on its way to america.
how much for the chip? or how much for an intact intake manifold?
you can get a chip from probinator for 50 bucks, but that's not installed. I think he charges another 15 or 20 bucks for soldering in the socket
I can sell you mine for 35 bucks. it doesn't come with the removable socket, but you can get those at radioshack. if you are confident with your soldering skills, then it's a pretty straight forward install. or you can get a tv repair place to solder it in for you. what's your location?

I'm in everett, wa. I would probably want to get the 93 chip though so I don't have any problems. I'm very new to this site. Not to sound like an idiot, but how do you "pm" someone? And on an unrelated subject, I have a clunk that sounds like its coming from under the hood. All my motor mounts are in place and tightened down. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what it might be? Could it possibly be motor mount bushings? And I just want to say thank you to all who have posted in response to my questions. You've been a great help. Keep up the good info.
And one more thing, I need 4 stock mx6 wheels because the guy I bought it from had tires on it that are too big and the darn things like to rub on the fenders. And the guy removed the splash shields so they would fit. Where do I post from? Sorry, site nav is pretty tough for me since I'm doing all of this from my cell phone and its hard to look for stuff.
there isn't a "93" chip. probinator is 94 and up. I also have a stoker100 kl31 chip that will work correctly with a 93, however you'll need a je50 vaf and it will throw a CEL
