Hi Miatatude, Got your post on another thread but thought I'd reply here to keep it all together...
That's a big question you ask..
I would start off with weight reduction. This has the largest impact on performance. Get decent pads for the front std or std slotted rotors (I have used Porterfield R4's to good effect), stiffer springs and uprated dampers with adjustable front top mounts (go for coilovers if you can afford it) and set the front to -3 deg camber 0 deg toe. Make the rear as stiff as possible in order to allow the car rotate which increases front traction.. That should get you started.. If you have any specific questions don't hesitate to ask...

Thanks so much for all of your advice! In your opinion, is it better to run the car in G-Stock, STS, or DSP? (I don't know if your familiar with scca classing or not).

Not familiar with SCCA.. I'm sure there are a few people on here that would know about that..

We've always been impressed with the mx-6's but have never thought about them as an autocross car. I understand they would compete in g-stock, or STS in scca regulated races and performance upgrades seem pretty affordable (ala ebay). What are your thoughts on this? We are looking at a '93 MX-6 with 150K miles for $1,800. Its a manual transmission, I believe the "LS" model, and has the 24 valve, DOHC. Any advice would be very appreciated!
the car used to be a serious player in SCCA Solo2 racing back when they were still being produced. i know a couple of people on this board who used to race one in the utah region [ironically they both raced the same car, as two different owners, one as g-stock and the other as sts].

i would recommend running the car stock, just to get a feel for it, then doing some research here for the different types of modifications available for the car. there are still some mods that are not allowed for STS. bigger brakes will immediately put you in SM [street mod], but coilovers are now allowed. you can use camber plates, strut tower bars, cross-drilled/slotted brake rotors, rear sway bar, lowering springs, adjustable struts and some other mods that i'm forgetting.

the complete list of class rules and regulations can be found at the SCCA website: SCCA Sports Car Club of America.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this before... TYRES!

by far the best, cheapest, easiest way to improve performance.

If STS (thats the stock class right?) allows semi slicks, go find a place that sells used semi slicks and go for it. Get an extra set of rims to put them on, lighter the better, but light weight = more money, so whatever your budget allows.

If it doesnt allow semis, a good set of street tyres will still make a large difference.

Actually STS is not a stock class, but even the stock classes allow an R-compound tire (which I believe would be a "semi" slick as you referred to it). I currently run on AVON'S full on slick that is heat cycled and specifically for autox. It is by far the best slick I've ever ran my miata on and unforuntately they are discontinuing it! The slick is/was very affordable @ $120 a tire.

As for my husband's '6, I would like for him to run atleast a season on good street tires so he can really learn how to "work" the car. Slicks tend to compensate for an inexperienced driver whereas street tires give better "feedback" to the driver. I waited a little over a season to switch to slicks, and boy did that make the world of difference!

By the way, we picked up our first '6 over the weekend in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. It's a '93, LS, only 129K miles, very good condition, tan leather interior, so far we are in L-O-V-E!
