Replacement statistics

Hi, I've had this idea for a long time and mentioned it here and there, but I never put it here. A few new members have recently made it obvious that the existing system is lacking :

post count : can be obtained by idiots whoring in random threads/lounge etc

result : high post count is not indicative of a members worth

karma : can be obtained just by being around a long time and posting a lot in the right places/ways etc

result : lots of karma is not indicative of a members worth by itself

however :

post count to karma ratio : Highly representative of a members worth and intelligence etc.

Proposal : find a way to hack VB to show the third statistic with the other three (scaled by some factor perhaps?) or just display the one ratio below the users name.

In this way smart users can start out on a good footing and stay there. They won't be waiting forever to have people listen to them etc.

All three statistics would be best as you could potentially get a good ratio by just say insulting sick or fraud or me and having everyone thank you for it :-) That would be counterproductive.

I don't know how difficult it would be, but it seems to me that it would be worth the effort.

Thoughts?

Fred.

You mean like how you have 1 karma point for every 5.8 posts and how I have 1 karma point for every 2.3 posts?

Exactly, but I think you'll find that if the following things were different so would the statistics be :

A consecutive K to same member as you see fit rather than constant "spread it around" messages each time i try to give one to members that are consistently good. etc.

B negative K applied to mods != insta ban ;-) (to be fair, I gave a neg to panther once and he accepted it and gave a + back, good form on his part!)

However yes, I still think such a scheme would be beneficial in identifying useful posters...

I'd have to say, Fredio54 would have about three to four times the karma if it wasn't for the "spread it around" limitation.

I will agree that spreading around Karma can get old, more so when those deserving it are often the same people.
The problems are: After helping a member with answers or trouble shouting, usually the only person to give out karma is a senior member and not the person you helped.
If we didn't have to spread K then we would have idiot's shouting Karma back and forth at each other trying to pad there reputation.

I have always looked at the two (post count and Karma), it gives a good idea of how much effort a member puts into his posts. (Gavin for example has 1972 posts and 1442 karma and when you read his posts you see why.)

Unfortunately if we did have the 3rd statistic it would make our "Kama Queen" look bad with 26 000+ post and only 2501 Karma points.

This leads directly to my problem.. I can hardly spread karma around.. I have already given it to all of the deserving (IMHO) posters.. but then since there simply aren't enough in the sub-forum's I frequent, I can't give it to them as much as I'd like.

Arguably I should read more forums.. but I don't care about the 2g stuff...

Regrettably it is a price that must be paid...

Still the Karma system works reasonably well. Lots of green gems (and yellow ones) on a poster generally indicate the chance of a higher quality post, versus a "haha, I lol'ed at that one" sort of useless response.

This is all good, except that Fred forgets the fact that your posts in many of the forums dont count towards your post total. SO people that whore up the lounge dont get anywhere, and if you whore in the technical sections long enough, people already get pissed at you and know who you are.

Or certain peopel around here just trying to bring other's krama total down by slamming them with negatives.

....in the end, I have to conclude with the main question:

Who the hell cares anyways? If all you do is sit around on a little forum and look at stats, then it's time to go get a damn life. Try getting out and get some fresh air, maybe hook up wioth a woman other than some chick on a webcam...

If you're going to talk about posts per karma or karma per post and direct it at me, lets clarify a couple things:

1) I have had my karma completely taken away numerous times, reset to zero.

2) I have had my karma deducted in 100, 500 and 1000 many times.

3) I have had my karma taken away by other members one bit at a time many times.

Onto the signature- goatcrapp made that and stuck it there, not me. I left it there solely for teh lulz. I do not think I am am "karma king" nor do I care. Since you guys seem to care so much, pour yourself a glass of Haterade and drink it up. It's lonely at the top and people are always going to talk smack when one person is there and they aren't. See numbers 1, 2 and 3 above. I haven't gotten to the top spot for no reason and that reason certainly hasn't been from begging.

carry on....

And being that I see and already know that the karma system is not going to change.......

I suggest we all move on. *hint hint*

One last post in this thread from me just because this is how it worked out today. Bottom line is that if you think your posts are karma worthy or you aren't getting it when you should be, make more posts like this:
http://www.mx6.com/forums/fe-dohc/20...ts-my-fe3.html (dyno results for my FE3)

As said, I didn't get mine for nothing.

It's such a hit-and-miss thing anyways. The posts that deserve karma never get them, then you get karma for posts that really dont deserve it.

I can't agree with that more. I can help tons of people and get no karma then get a ton off a pic posted of my car. What can you do?
