Just read alanharris' thread about his wife driving his car some of the posts reminded me just how unforgiving men are about women drivers.Let me tell you a tale about how clever men are.
Gerry's car was in the garage so he had to go out and took my rover 820 (by the wat this car was in showroom condition).He drove up to northampton no probs on collected what he had gone up there for and started back.Well the M1 was heaving so he took to the A5, going along at what he says is the normal speed limit for that road ie 60mph.There was a line of traffic in front of him all doing approx 60mph when all of a sudden some lunatic leapt out from in front of a broken down car waving a hi-vi about in the middle of the road.All the cars in front started slamming on their brakes including the car directly in front of Gerry.As he tried to swerve aroung said car he came face to face with on coming traffic and had to pull back onto his side of road.Unfortunatly he didnt stop in time to avoid the car in front and smashed straight into the back of it.He managed to total both cars the other one being driven by someone from a local car showroom who had borrowed the car for the weekend.He managed to total a brand spanking new audi that had 12 miles on it.The funniest thing was when the RAC collected him there control centre neglected to inform the driver that in the car was a 9ft burmese python that Gerry had just collected and the driver was terrified of snakes.
So men arn't the perfect road users they all seem to think they are some of them don't even need to be driving to cause a smash.Good job I had protected no claims just never had a car in such great condition since (hence my mx6).By the way the snake was fine although Gerry was sore for several days (after I got hold of him lol)
Just one thing in Gerrys defence, his reaction time was proberbly slowed when he was trying to figure out what the hell this is
He doesn't have any trouble identifying a hi-vi as he wears one every night at work.For those of you that are thick (windy) its a high visibility vest
The cheeky sod (Gerry) has just said I dont see what the issue is after all it was only a rover.Sometimes I feel like I would like to be a widow lol
Women drivers rock especially when they wap male drivers in Rovers on race circuits .......

Women better drivers than men?? You can put it all down to insurance risk. My missus is 21, her insurance on her (group 2) car is something like £600 a year. One of our male friends is also 21, his insurance on his (group 3) car is £2200 a year. Both have 1 year no-claims. I dont think the £1600 difference is all down to 1 extra insurance group.
Its basically in the figures, us men are more likely to take unnecessary risks, and more likely to regret it afterwards.
As for the missus (shes my fiancee, no wedding bells yet lol), I did the last bits of instructions to get her through her driving tests and even though I passed first time and she took several attempts, I still say shes a better driver than I am.
Im sure there are safe male drivers about, I might even be classed as one of them but thats not my opinion. I will bet theres a lot fewer safe male drivers than female though.
And Paula, it looks like you had the time of your life there.

It was an awesome day as my GTI was the official Course Car at a 750 Motor Club meeting in September 2002.
The Deputy Clerk of the Course sitting beside me said afterwards " Paula, I think you have done this before ", which I had when I was younger.

I bet it was.The best day I had was doing an anti highjack course driving along with a blanket over the windscreen and your passenger shouting out instructions as they hung out the window.It was awsome.They also took it in turns to see how many times they could j/y turn a range rover before it toppled over.I have also been on a skid pan which was great fun too (don't think my dad would agreed though)

I agree women are safer drivers.On the insurance front I get fed up with mine.I have held a licence for 18 years,with 9 years no claims and am 36.gerry has held his licence less years with 3 years no claims and is 45 So why is my insurance on a k reg mx6 higher than his on a n reg.Insurance just doesnt make sense.

Have to say you're probably right. I wouldn't class myself as the safest driver around, although I would say I'm better than most.
Mark (mx6 addict) will be aware of the layout of Tesco car park, their petrol station and the town square in Stalybridge. I was coming through the square up to the roundabout that is the entrance and exit for all three last night (from the post office) and as I crossed the roundabout to head back to work, with no other cars around except for at the traffic lights on the main road, some muppet in a rather battered Fiesta nearly collected the tail end of the 6 as he screamed (metaphorically speaking of course) through Tesco car park (which is at a right angle to where I was going), across the roundabout without so much as a glance and disappeared into the petrol station. I had no idea Fiesta drivers needed to be in such a hurry to spend more money on fuel, but he gives male drivers a bad name IMO.
Having said that, when we had an Escort TD about 5 years ago, I remember my OH pulling a ton on the M56 on the way to my parents in North Wales
Paula, nice Metro. I sold my 1993 L plate GTi around 6 years ago for about £300 spares/repair. It had had a hard life and had been rebuilt at the front end after a shunt. It was never the same though. It was a very very nippy car for it's size.

I gather that only around 2300 were ever built, so they are rarer than our 6's now.
When they were in production the "then" high insurance premiums on hot hatches affected all makes of this type of car.
Mine is mint and at present I only run her around the service road of the flats where I live.
In the late summer, I am going to have the cambelt changed and put her back on the road as I miss her too much and if the weather is dry, I will bring her up to Trax.
