Historic F1 cars courtesy of Paula

OK, I promised to host a few pics for Paula a while back. My apologies for the delay, i've been busy and my PC has been taunting me.

From Left to right:
John Smith - International MSA Clerk of the Course
Track Marshall
Derek Bell - 5 times winner of the Le Mans 24 hr race

Jackie Oliver in Ford GT40

Ex Keke Roasberg Williams from 1982? I think this is now driven by Joaquim Folch.

JPS Lotus, don't know what year this is but I think it's one of Our Nige's old cars.

Ex Gilles Villeneuve Ferrari from 1978

Tyrell P34 from mid 1970s. Don't know what year this ones from.

1981 Williams, 1978 Arrows and 1976 Penske

From left; 1981 Williams, 1982 Williams and an 1981? Arrows.

Einstein also sent me some photos. Cheers for those I think they've already been posted thought.
All these were taken by Paula Hamilton. Thanks again for sending them.
There's only one car I can see there (in the background) that's younger than me... and i'm not even sure about that seeing as it's in Tyrell's classic 'we forgot to get some sponsors again' livery.

You sure about that? I thought Mazda had only won Le Mans once in 1991 with Bertrand Gatchot, Johny Herbert and... err, some German guy.

I resign......

Yup... thinking of Porsche again

Cheesy's right.... It was driven by Bertrand Gachot, Johnny Herbert and Volker Weidler and completed over 4900km at an average speed of 205km/h.

John..

p.s. I have it on good authority, that the "stig" is Bertrand Gachot..

Oh, however could Volker Weidler have slipped my mind? And how did I manage to spell Johnny wrong?

Is Bertrand meant to be the new Stig? Apparently after Perry Mcarthy the new, white Stig was Julian Bailey. This is according to the Daily Mail so make your own mind up. It would make sense seeing as Julian Bailey filled in when Perry Mcarthy was away and they're good mates. Still if it is Julian Bailey expect to see him killed off soon, they did that to Perry when the Mail found out about him.
It's amazing how absolutely any thread can turn into a discussion about who the Stig is. I hope whoever thought him up got a good bonus.
Anywho, here's a picture of a Mazda

I think REGRESSED is a better description (and is it still a sport?) but that's just my personal opinion. Slightly biased towards historic racing as I'm the guy on the left in the first photo (thanks Paula). I normally drive the pace car (was given a fairly 'clapped' 911 by the circuit on this occasion) but as Derek Bell was there I had him chauffer me - awesome experience except his missed a couple of gear changes - I said "even I can do that!"
Often used my 'old' MX6 as a pace car and now looking forward to using my 'new' MX6 (the 'ex' Welton car - which is just soooooo lovely!) in 2006.

True.. I'm all for advancing the technology used in F1 etc, at then end of the day, some of the cool features work their way down to our cars after several years.

But I do widsh they'd get rid of some of the computer trickery in F1. Give them a manual clutch and gearbox and see how they get on

Any true fan wants them to get rid of all the trickery they've got on board these days. Get rid of traction control, radial tyres and flappy paddle gear boxes and then we'll see some racing.
BTW, the only reason they didn't revert to manual gear boxes was to stop drivers missing a gear and melting their engine. But I bet they could come up with a way of stopping that happening, or, with all the money they've saved on software, they could buy some more engines. Just like they used to.

Grin Hi everyone

Thank you for all your kind comments on my photographs taken at last year's Silverstone Classic held between July 30/31st 2005.

A big thank you to Cris ( Hot Cheese ) for posting them . I owe you one

Here are some more details of my fotos:

I am not certain of all the original drivers of these cars so I have put a * by the driver's name if I am not 100% sure.

Photos 1 & 2 are as detailed by Cris.

Photo 3: Car no 7 is indeed the ex Keke Rosberg's 1982 Williams FW 08/5 driven by Spaniard Joaquin Folch. Keke, of course, won the 1982 F1 World Championship. Car no 24 is the *Michele Alboreto Tyrell 011/6 driven by Brit John Wilson.

Photo 4: Car no 11 is *Elio de Angelis's 1982 Lotus 91/10 driven by Brit Dan Collins. This was the last Colin Chapman designed F1 car.

Photo 5: Car no 12 is the ex Gilles Villeneuve's 1978 Ferrari 312 T3 driven by Dutchman John Bosch. Gilles was and still is my hero

Photo 6: Car no 2 is *Jody Scheckter & *Patrick Depailler's 1976 Tyrrell P34 driven by Brit Martin Stretton.

Before I detail the next two fotos, Here is a bit of Williams F1 driver history:

In 1980 - Alan Jones & Carlos Reuteman drove for the team with Jones landing the F1 World Champioship.

In 1981 - These same two drivers drove for the team with Reuteman throwing away the championship to Nelson Piquet at the last race in Las Vegas. Alan had an unreliable car and suffererd a poor relationship with Carlos. He retired from Williams at Las Vegas.

In 1982 - Carlos Reuteman retired from GP racing after the first two races and Keke Rosberg, of course, won the championship that season.

Photo 7: Car no 37 is either a 1981/82 *Alan Jones/ *Carlos Reuteman Williams FW 07D/16 driven by American Roy Walzer. Behind is car no 30 which probably is *Rolf Stommelen's 1978 Arrows A1 driven by Brit Rowland Kinch. Then behind the Arrows - Car no 14 ( Sorry Cris ) is the 1980 ex *Tiff Needell, *Marc Surer's Ensign N180 in Unipart livery driven by Brit David Abbott.

Photo 8: These are the winnings cars. 1st was car no 21 which is a 1981 *Alan Jones/*Carlos Reutemann Williams FW07C/15 driven by American Duncan Dayton. 2nd was car no 7 ( details as Photo 3 ) and 3rd was car no 29 which is a Marc Surer/Brian Henton 1982 Arrows A4/5 driven by German Hubertus Bahlsen.

The FIA Championship for Thoroughbred GP Cars consists of seven rounds run from April to October. They visit Hockenheim(D), Monza(I), Zandvoort(NL), Silverstone(GB), Magny Cours(F) and Estoril(Esp). I forget where the other round is held.

There are 4 classes:

A - Period G F1 cars built and raced prior to 31/12/71
B - Post 1971 non ground effect F1 cars
C - All post 1971 ground effect cars
D - All post 1971 flat bottomed F1 cars

For more details of this superb championship visit:

http://www.tgpf1.com/home.htm

My very good friend Clerk of the Course John Smith always has this to say at his his Drivers Briefing before the start of the day's racing.

" These old F1 cars are wonderful cars but remember to drive them carefully as they do not have the structural safety of present day Formula One cars ".

The F5000 cars that now race in the Historic Sports Car Club were known as Widow Makers.

How right John is telling the drivers to have respect for themselves, their cars and the other drivers !!!

Look at all the above mentioned drivers that are sadly no longer with us.

Michele Alboreto
Gilles Villeneuve
Elio de Angelis
Rolf Stommelen
Patrick Depailler

Anyway, I am sure that John will be only to happy to see any of you on here at Race Meetings this coming season.

This reminds me, I have to polish up his MX 6 again soon.

Cannot have a tatty Course Car.....

Nite

Paula
