I am a little dubious about the mileage - it's only done 4.5k a year on average and I'd be a little worried if that was all in city traffic.

I wouldn't be too put off by low mileage if I were you. It sounds very similar to my car, but that had 54k with leather and its a manual. I've only had it since March, but its not failed me once.

There is nothing wrong with autoboxes as long as they have oil changes at the recommended intervals and don't get too hot. Mine has done 164k.

The problem is that constantly sitting in traffic for 12 years will allow the box to continually overheat because the smallish oil cooler can't dissipate all that heat generated by a partially engaged torque converter.
