hey guys, my car is finally dead, the official line from the mazda garage is i have "internal engine failure"... basically, they have no idea whats wrong with it, the guy says hes stripped it and can find nothing wrong with it. just wondering if you guys thought it would be better to try to sell the whole car or part it out? it has leather interior in really good nick and a set of newish 17" alloys, the bodywork is pretty good too, the odd wee mark. any advice is much appreciated.
fuel, compression, timing and spark... if you have all 4, it will run, no buts.
As it stands, it's worth a few hundred, but I would much rather see it running again.. and I am pretty sure you would as well..
As much info as possible, a second opinion would be good.. and above all, check for the 4 things listed above..

I have not had any dealings with mazda myself but from my own experience, the worst place to take a car for repairs is the dealers. Never been to one yet who were competent.
This is my opinion only and may not reflect others experiences.
Like John says I would definitely get a second opinion.
This annoys the hell out of me. Mazda garages are the biggest muppets in the world, with absolutely no ability. Why people continue to take the dealers word for it I will never know.
Cheeky, where are you based? Can one of us on here who knows the car come and have a look?

Don't believe what mazda tell you. I took my MX-6 to mazda a while back with a misfire, they said that it was a faulty head gasket. Long story short - one new set of HT leads later the misfire was sorted, I'll be keeping the £1100 that you quoted me for a new headgasket thank you very much.
As John says, just post up as much information on the problem as you can and we'll no doubt get an explanation of some sort for you. Not from myself I might add, John's the man for that.
PS:If anyone is interested, I most likely spent the £1100 that I saved on beer.
thanks for the advice, thing is no one i know has any experience with a 6, i have a mate who is very handy though and he said he thought it was an electrical problem, when you tried to start it the cabin lights went out like something was draining power so there wasnt enough to start the engine... sounded very clunky but it was trying to start he said, he couldnt pull the codes though because he had the wrong number of pin adaptor so suggested i try mazda, problem is im running out of cash, cost me £140 for two hours labour for the "internal engine failure" line. really annoying considering it has just over 60k on the clock and was running perfect, it literally just cut out. hope that sheds a bit more light on things.
I know of half a dozen MX6 owners who have had excellent service there, albeit not cheap due to any dealer's overheads.
Find yourself an ex-Mazda dealer trained mechanic who has set up on his own and you will get a great deal.

If it was running fine then just cut out I can't see it being 'internal engine failure', or at least not a major failure.
The above assumes you haven't got a CAI kit fitted and driven through a deep ford
From your description later about there not being enough power to start I suggest the following.
Fully charge the battery, remember to have your radio codes handy if you remove the battery for charging and your radio uses security codes.
Get your knowledgable mate round, remove all the spark plugs and see if the engine spins over. If it does put the plugs back in and see if it will start.
If it still spins over but doesn't start check if you have a spark and sniff if you can smell fuel., then go from there.
If the engine won't spin over with no plugs in then you have either major engine problems (very unlikely) or a faulty starter motor - maybe something simple like a lose wire or poor connection somewhere.
How about a few of us scottish members make the way up! Im no mechanic (soon to be trained) but would be willing to drive across the country to see the masters in action! haha
