roof rack

Anyone recommend a roof rack so that I can take my and my boy's bikes out? Was there a dedicated one? Where's the best place to get one? Does anyone have one for sale?

Cheers

OK, the only one you'll find is the Thule system which comprises:

761 - Roof Bars
950 - Foot Kit,
190 - Fitting Kit
and 477 - Short Roof Adaptor (SRA)

This little lot will set you back about £180 new. It's discontinued for the MX6 but is the same for the Probe and everything except the foot kit is available from Halfrauds.

I picked mine up for less than £50 on ebay but had to buy from four different sellers.

PS, you'll need to add cycle carriers to that as well, they're going on ebay for about £50/pr

Aha. Found somewhere. Not cheap though...but probably more so than Halfords:

They're quoting the wrong parts for the MX6 although I don't know the system well enough to say if they're compatible.

They do show the right parts for the Probe though. £131odd isn't a bad price either.

Better than Halfrauds anyway. If there's no rush, I'd watch ebay with those numbers.

When I bought mine, Thule did not list any fitment for the MX6, saying it was discontinued. I'm still sceptical about what they've listed as there is no mention of the short roof adaptor.

If you don't use that, then the bars of the rack will be about 15" apart as there is nowhere to attach the rear bar to. I've got the complete kit and it definitely needs the SRA (Unless your bikes are only 2' long ) Take a look at the top edge of your door, that's where the retaining fittings arer located, and chack how much space you have.

I've tried the fittings I have and the work, more than that I cannot say. If you go for the fitment they recommend, let me know how you get on as I'm now intrigued!

Not sure what to do quite honestly. The difference is that the 761 is 120cm long and the 762 is 135 cm, I think. As for the fitting kit...i don't know. I may go for their recommendation as then I have someone to come back to if they're wrong.

I don't think the 6" difference in length is an issue, if the right size is 120cm, the others will hang over the roof by 3" per side (I didn't actually look at that when I fitted mine)

The main issue is the SRA as that's the only way to get the rear bar on the back of the roof.

The only reason for any difference that I can see is the two little blanking plates above the door, I'm not dure if your fitting kit will locate in whatever is under those (I'll have a look at the donor car over the weekend and see what's under there). Apart from that, our roof is the same as the Probe and the fixing kit locates on the edge of the doorway.

At least if you buy new, you can whinge at the retailer if they get it wrong.

All the best
