Doesn't sound like the joints to me.... wouldn't be a whirring noise.. more of a clicking at first, eventually going to a knocking noise.. worse on full lock..
Whirring could be brakes or Wheel bearings worn..
You need to get the front jacked up, try to wobble the wheel... there should be almost no play whatsoever.. 1mm max at the edge of the tyre..
Spin the wheel and listen for anything weird..
Remove the wheel, and check the condition of the disks and pads.

Einstein is right, wouldnt be a whirring.... Mine actually started to click shortly after fitting the coilovers.... thought that was a cv joint... found out that i had the car sitting to low.... higher it up a bit and hey presto it had gone, must check that out !!
More like a bearing or if you've had the wheel off recently and belted somewhere in there with a hammer it could be just crap in your discs or summit ohhh i dunno
As its a whirring that gets worse when turning it does sound very much like a wheel bearing. CV joint often makes a clunking. Mine is clunking I have a split outer gaitor, so im hoping with a new gaitor and packed full of grease it will sort out

I'm getting my outer CV joint replaced tomorrow, being charged £60 including the joint and boot. I didn't think that was a bad price, maybe someone will be along to tell me otherwise?

What's that coming over the hill? Is it a Mazda? Is it a Mazda
Seems OK Matt.. it's not a big job in itself, but that is a good price including the joint...
Whoever priced it up was probably smoking it

£60, darn that emans ive no excuse to do it myself, at that price I may as well let someone else get mucky and I get a day off. I wil ask the local Mazda specialist if he can beat that.
