The reason being, i may come over soon for some work. I imagine the work to be in and around London.
Things i dont know about, are the cost off living. Rent/share accomodation prices. Prices of cars. I would also like to know what the average income would be over there.
At the moment, i am have some feelers out for work. I just have to weigh up whether it is a viable option.
I am Australian born but with a Brittish Passport (parents are Scotts). So i have a heap of relatives in Scotland, so that would be great to meet them aswell.
For a living, i install security equipment (alarms, cameras etc). But the field i may end up getting the work in is with wiring up mobile phone towers.
If you could provide me with any insight on London etc. It would be greatly appreciated.

Plenty of nightlife, so you'll be ok to bring your sheila..
Seriously, there are members from down there that could give you all the info you need..

what you need to know its that nearly all of you lot are already over here! You'll be looking to move into a large house with about 15 other Oz's n Kiwi's in Acton and frequent the Redback every friday and saturday.
Sorry...
Rent, your looking about about £400-£500 / month for anything decent, if you share you may get it cheaper, but I'd say thats a good price to budget for. There are free mags, TNT is one, that cater for people looking for work / home etc.
Cars... well a 6 is going to cost you £1500 upwards! but its not the ideal car for London! Tax is £100 and something a year (can never remeber) and insurance is going to be at least £500 if your leaving it anywhere in London.
Average income I belive is £25k a year.. but I could be wrong.
yep, noone has pretty much got it bang there for around london, though you'd probably have to stick to the outer zones (like me!) as rent is hugely expensive closer to the centre, actually so are general expenses like car insurance (depending on age - no claims bonus - number of years driving)
Petrol is around 78p - 80p per litre (booo! needs to be cheaper!)
I swear the average income is lower than that (well it feels like that to me - bah!).
Pay isn't great and everything costs tonnes. Remember the congestion charge if you're looking to drive into london centre. Public transport costs are going up, bus is £1.20 fixed one way, train costs are getting more expensive.
Renting, yeah like noone said, around £500 upwards for you're own space, otherwise its a room in a house with others.
England is cold and wet... But at least we have loads of green grass, unlike my experience of Oz, which was red dust...
The average wage in the UK is £28k, but in London that rises to more like £35. And in terms of good job boards, I work in recruitment and the best and mose widely used by far is www.jobsite.co.uk, i've used monster and jobserve b4 and they're not as good...

I thought the average uk wage was actually about 18 grand. Thats how they calculate when you have to repay your student loan, once you earn over the average wage. I really doubt its anywhere near 28. If it was we would be richer per head than the USA. You can rent a room in london for 100 pounds a week, and a small flat starting at 500 pounds. Its only 1000 if you want a snazzy place. Outskirts are much much cheaper. Especially north London and Heartfordshire. In the south areas like Mordon are also quite cheap.
I could only find data from 1997 but to give you an idea, Auz = 21K usd, UK = 20K usd, USA 29K usd. (gdp per capita) or (money per person) Your standard of living wont be as good in UK especially in London as it is back home. But hey, London is an interesting place and worth living here for as long as you can take it. Good luck.
I am going to get shot for this but I consider living in London to be a complete dead loss. It is extremely expensive and frankly most of it is not worth it.
It is worth noting a number of towns around London (I am thinking of Ipswich in particular) have train services that will get you into London in around an hour, and overall you may find this cheaper than living in London itself (I think you can still rent a bedsit in Ipswich for around £250 a month)
Forget having a car unless the company provides it. It just is not worth the hassle and expense. The Tube is a good way to get around but does not cover South London as well as North London.
From personal experience of going to some parties in London when I was at Oxford most girls there only know two words, one of which is "off".
Before the firing squad raises their weapons can I say my father is South London born and bred. He moved out 25 years ago and has never considered moving back.

A lot of people move north.. like even as far as Doncaster, because you can still get a train to London that takes less than 90 minutes...
Living in Doncaster is peanuts compared to London, probably rent a house for about £60 a week..
Worth thinking about..
