Steel Parcel Shelf

Can any one tell me if the parcel shelf can be removed?
It is just a shelf right it doesnt play any part in giving strength to the rear end?

Just lookin at new ways to fit in my system as current lay out is moving bout as drive and it takes up far to much boot space.

The shelf does add strength but if you install a decent strut bar you could remove it then. I have tubing welded to the rear strut towers and it adds a lot of stiffness to the car. I plan on removing my shelf as it is redundant now..

I wouldn't remove it as it should be there to play a structural role in the event of an accident..... remember reading a while back about someone with way to much money buying an M3 and putting in some serious kit only for the car to be rear ended and written off basicly because this plank had cut the steel parcel shelf to put in his audio...

The funny bit was that when he tried to get his audio equipment back the recovery people had nicked it all...
