Power brakes need the engine to be on. Mine also stiffens the pedal with the engine off

Completely normal...

My Lexus is different... has power brakes, no brake servo..

Uses a hydraulic pump, (like Rolls-Royce) the pedal comes up when you start the engine.

£2000 if it goes wrong

it's like Porshe Forum: "i got a flat tire. Should i trade it in or try selling it privatly" or Tempo Forum : "Replaced everything, still doesn't start"

lol, how long have you had the car? and when did you notice this? and why woudl you be holding the brake pedal when shutting off the car?
and your other mx6 DID do it, you must of never noticed it

and in my probe, when i get in i push as hard as i can on the brake, when i start it the pedal goes all the way down, it's called power brakes my friend

i have a sloping drive, when i stop i brake, when i turn key off it pumps the brake peddal up hard, when u start it its back to normal, did not do it before as i have changed the engine, no big deal just wondered why it does it, no problem with it, might be the difference between a j spec and uk spec

i know what power brakes are and a servo, i mean the peddal goes rock hard even if i dont hold my foot on it when i turn it off, normally on a car u can push peddal 3 to 4 times before goes hard, mines rock hard before u even push it

A hard brake pedal can be a a sign of a seized calliper. failing that check the non return valve in the vacuum line to the servo or the servo diaphragm has a leak and you would need to replace the servo. The pedal should lift and go hard after switching off the engine but only after you pump it a few times not just by holding your foot on it.

I think you could be on the right track Gerry.... non return valve sounds about right..

It should hold the vacuum in the servo, but if faulty, it wil make the pedal hard straight away.
