Starter Motor needed URGENTLY!
Hi people.
My 1 yr old refurbed starter motor has given up the ghost. I was worried it was the running gear on the fly. However I have been led to believe that the starter motor itself is at fault. When starting, there used to be a grinding noise, now there isn't even that. It just whirrs away. As far as I can tell there is a system in the starter that pushes the gears into place when activating - I think this system has failed. At least, I'm hoping that is what it is. If anyone has one I can grab off them for not much money - I'm talking £10 - £20, I would be very grateful. If you are close enough to Kettering Northamptonshire, I would come pick it up asap. Help me out here folks - I need the car back on the road asap! Ben. |

Got this sorted.
By the way people - Don't ever buy a Starter Motor from Milton Keynes Spares (MKS) - you can find them in the Yellow Pages. I bought an overpriced refurbished starter motor from them and it lasted just one year. Piece of rubbish! Hopefully this will save you all some heartache. Ben. |

I've always rebuilt my own. My auto sparky carried brushes and had a small lathe so I just turned down the armature a little and put fresh brushes in and lubed it all up. I used to eat the non gearbox style about once a year. It was many many short trips that did it for me. I got a jap box style starter and never had another issue :-) Perhaps find a sparky that can rebuild yours while you wait/watch so you can confirm the quality. If you just swap the brushes out (which will work pretty well with a light hand sand of the armature) you can do it at home with just a decent soldering iron and basic tools.
