Well done, you've done the hard bit now! There is plenty of meat on there for the new threads and don't even worry if you don't drill them straight, the bolts will still tighten and do their job.

Thanks!

bit of a bummer, it looks like i will need two kits, which i cant really afford, one kit for the 9mm bolts, and one for the single 7mm bolt (alternator bracket), i dont suppose any one has either they can lend me?? would mean i only had to buy one kit and helicoils for both bolts...

Or.... You could just make them all M10 As long as there is plenty of material around the hole making them bigger will not harm them.

hmm, fair point Gerry. I am going to TRY and keep them all original though, simply cos Paul kindly gave the the correct size 7mm bolt for the alternator bracket, and at the end of the day its about £50 for both kits, but point taken-i could make the alternaot bracket hole 9mm as well, its just i dont know if i will get a long enough 9mm bolt to fit, i would also have to hack off the tube part of the bracket and drill a bigger hole in that..

can i just confirm though, as i am a bit thick when it comes to this sort of thing, if i have a 9mm bolt, and a 9mm bolt hole, to re thread that hole, do i need M10 helicoil kit to re thread and return the hole back to 9mm, or M9? basically i want to use the original bolts...

there is no such thing as M9! It's either M8, M10 M12 etc.
If you have a 9mm hole now you will need to go up to a M10 Helicoil. You will not be able to take it back down to M8 again without an insert which is beyond your ability to do.
The bolts you have are probably no good to you. You need some M10 Cap heads to suit the thread pitch you use. These are Bolts that take an Allen Key to tighten them up. They have a much smaller, round head than a normal Hex Bolt so you don't have the problem of the bolt head being too large and not getting a spanner in there.
Something like these.
M10 X 30 STAINLESS ALLEN CAP HEAD SOCKET BOLTS 6 PACK on eBay, also, Nuts Bolts Nails Screws, Building Materials Supplies, Business, Office Industrial (end time 07-Aug-08 17:56:33 BST)
These are stainless and expensive but they are available in small quantities although you will need to mail the seller and ask what pitch the threads are before ordering.

yes they will be suitable just make sure you get the right length, those I listed are just examples.
There is no M7 Either. How have you measured the Bolt diameter?

Did you measure the thread or the blank shoulder if there was one? If you measured the thread it sounds like you have an M6 and an M8. If you measured the shoulder of the bolt try measuring the middle of the thread and letting me know what it is. What did you use to measure them?

A vernier caliper is best for measuring diameters (internal and external) plus they are also good for measuring depth of holes.

Sounds an expensive tool, but Wilkinsons do a plastic one for 99p..

hmm, 99p sounds interesting..

i used a ruler (shatter proof, like them we had at school) and measured the thread part of each bolt....

did a measure of the actual thread, it LOOKS like 2mm, but i still dont have a correct tool.

ALSO (sorry) would i use a re thread tool to re do the thread of the bolt hole, or helicoil? I ask because the heliocil inserts look to be very short, like less than half the length of the actual bolt...looking at a tap and die kit, the tools in there look like they would re thread the entire newly drilled hole, but would a new bolt from B&Q fit it then? I expect the thread has to be the same, but its unclear if the M10's go up to 2mm for the thread in these kits on ebay! just about to order some m8 and m10 bolts, correct length from ebay, but liek i say, thread is a little unclear...

parts ordered-two sets of almost spot on length and diameter bolts (hex type) and one m10 helicoil kit. Although i do need two helicoil kits, i am going to see how this goes, and see if i can make the smaller hole into an M10, fingers crossed, if all this works i might have the car up and running at weekend!
