If it was me, and I'd put in that much effort to get my car sorted, and come so far over such a long time after thinking that my car was dead, you'd have to prize the car from my cold dead hands, and even then I'd haunt it.

I'm another guy who's been following your brave efforts to sort out this problem, keep up the good work - so close!!

well, i teetered on the edge of selling the car, as some of you know, but like you say, so much effort,. so much time and money, i want to fix the car, and keep it. Oh i am sure something else will come along to fix and spend money on, but at least i know the car better now...

You just have to look at the rest of the car, and you know it HAS to be fixed rather than sold or worse, scrapped..

It just makes sense to fix her, but saying that, had this gone to a garage, the expense would have put anybody off... this really is the only viable option..

Go Clive GO !

driving around with it like that for about 18 months!!

anyway, got the kit now, got the bolts too, so am off to drill a hole, only question is, the helicoils are really short, is that it, or do i need longer ones?? the tool looks like it will only allow me to insert the small helicoils that much into the hole...

Because of the strength needed in that area, I would be tempted to go for the longest helicoils that will go in there..

I have heard you can fit more than one helicoil in a hole though..

hmm, darn it! actually, just might have had a brainwave. th eheliocil insetion tol has a groove at the end fo rthe tang, fine, but it also has a disc that push the helicoil in, this LOOKS adjustable, BUT the only problem then is the tang groove, what if i load up say 3 helicoils, minus tangs on two and leav e the end one with tang, do you reckon that will work? i just dont want to start and find i hav eforced 2 of three in there and its not right! so close....

dang! just found out, i defo need to longest helicoil to fit th ehole, so it smy gues long enough fo rthe entire thread of the bolt, which is 3 coils, or 3cm....back to ebay...

You can't stack them like that, the threads probably wouldn't line up correctly. the inserts themselves are quite cheap, it's better to get some longer ones and do it right first time.

totally agree, now i hav ethe kit i understand a little better, but i cant find ANY long ones anywhere!! i need some approx 3cm long...

** I have tapped the first bolt hole, surprisingly easy. I did try to screw in a helicoil, just to test if the start of the bolt hole would be ok (after my wonky drilling) and it looks like it will be, just need them longer helicoils now!

Actually you don't!
I double checked with the tool room at work and because of the strength of the Helicoils Stainless threads and the way it's threaded in to the Aluminium it will be many times stronger than the original Ail threads. The most common available Helicoil inserts are 1.5D which are 1.5x the thread diameter so a M10 Helicoil will be 15mm long.
Get to work Clive!
