I am considering changing my MX6 and welcome suggestions/ advice.
Budget is very limited, around £1200.
Under consideration would be a mid 90's Celica GT, maybe Hyundai Coupe or a later model MX6, mine's a '92; and what else?
Would love a Supra but can't afford or the fuel consumption, so Celica GT4 are out for the same reason, and where can you enjoy 250BHP on todays roads?
TINY boot
ridiculous "ski" hatch in one seat, seats dont fold flat.
crazy use of space in the cab-its HUGE, but no where to put ANYTHING.
Glove box is just that, a box that will fit one pair of gloves.
Quite a bit more expensive to run that the 6 I have found, believe it or not.
however, the car was brilliant, so refined, and pretty darn quick (I had the 2.3 4 wheel steer model), really good looking car. Very comfortable for the driver and passenger. It was superbly reliable, the only issues i had were a weird fuel problem where after a run, stopping the car would result in not being able to restart for litterally 3 minutes, and a seemingly consistent hole in the exhaust. Thats it. I heard the newer ones are much much better, and easily buyable for £1200.
What about a Cougar (FORD yes, but V6 and very similar to mx6)? or maybe a Fiat Coupe?
I'm in the same boat as you at the moment, not sure at all what to do. I'm thinking MX5 or MR2 as well.
I remember reading somewhere that Celica GTs were pretty slow, not sure if it's true and can't honestly be arsed to check.
You can pick up a really nice 97 MX6 with Speedline alloys and leather for your budget, with change.
Other things i've been looking at are Cougar (amazingly cheap although i've read John's opinion of the engine), Fiat Coupe, Nissan 200SX, Alfa 156.
The late 90's 323F Sport is also a good buy if you fancy something a bit normal.
Cougar !!! don't make me laugh
Italian.. good styling, but awful electrics and reliability.
It just has to be Japanese for reliability.. and any manufacturer is good there, although I very much dislike the Honda V-Tec engines.. for various reasons...
The Celica is slow, GT4 pretty quick, but as you say, not economical.
I have driven the Hyundai Coupe.. drives well, though much slower.. feels cheap.
It is difficult to recommend a car for someone else, as you tend to pass over your own tastes, rather than what the other person really wants..
With me, I wanted Luxury... plus reliability, hence the Lexus.. easy choice really..
If you are looking for a sporty, practical 2 door coupe, there isn't many that are as good as a 6.. in my opinion... and if you want 4 doors and a bit more practical, then the 626GT fits the bill... however, they stopped making it in 93/94..
things like build quality, reliability, comfort, and being practical are very high up on my list.... more than performance or economy.. if I wanted fast, I'd buy a skyline or summat.. if I wanted economy, I'd buy a Yaris..
At the end of the day, it's your choice.. but as you still want the sporty, practical 2 door coupe, then may I suggest you buy a newer MX-6.
You know the car, you arn't going to have any disapointments with something different.
however, if you ARE wanting a change..... there are only a few things to look for..
reliability: (Japanese)
cost: (repairs as well as running)
performance/economy: (faster usually costs more)
how practical: (boot size at least)

I picked up my MX6 nearly 12 months ago for £950 on a P 1997 plate with 114k and "full history" so i guess with £1200 you should be able to go for a P or R plate with less miles if you can find one. If thats not going to be vastly superior to what you've already got , personnally i would stick with the '92 and spend a bit on that . I think in maybe 2 or three years time the MX6 isgoing to be quite rare and the values should creep-up as they become collectable. The only thing i'd change mine for is a Nissan 200sx touring or an early Skyline but one would need more than £1200 , although i've seen some reasonable sx tourers for close to 1200 . The Celica is a good car but to swap one for an MX6 ? i'd feel i'd lost out a bit unless it was way newer or a GT4 . £1200 might get you a Mitsubishi FTO ?
Ah crap, sorry windy. Didn't realise that it was that one that got nicked.

John, I know the three dots are supposed to provide a bit of mystery but i'd love to know why you don't like V-Tecs. Could save me making a mistake.
MY car is a 92. I have changed the engine for a J-Spec motor, and modded pretty much everything else. Its just about to hit 100k mileage, the only let downs are the scratched windows, dodgy bodywork and window motors.
The window motors I can fix, the windows I can fix, the bodywork is a time and money job. Wouldn't change it for the world.
