I have the got the classic tap tap tap from the boot area. I had a look under and one of the drop link rubber bushes is worn. I'm sure i remember seeing in past posts that Nissan Micra bushes are the same, but cost a whole lot less? Has anyone done this job and am i correct about the Micra fitting? Any answers gratefully accepted .......Adrian
I have just been looking in my Haynes Repair Manual for the Mazda 626, MX6 and Ford Probe and is this the correct section titled 12 Stabilizer bar (rear) - removal and installation with illustrations 12.2 and 12.3?
Hi Paula, if you look at page 10-3 the bottom picture arrows the stableizer link bar (item 2), that's the little bliter. It's about four inches long.
They are more difficult to remove that to fit.
As you can see it looks a bit like a dogs bone, a bar with a top bit and a bottom bit. The top and bottom have a threaded bar coming out (you can just see it on the right hand side of the top bit). The threaded bar is mounted in rubber in the link, so because the link has been on the car for some time the nut will be well and trully on, when you try to undo the nut it will grip the thread and if the rubber its mounted in isnt already loose it will be.
They know this happens so the threaded bar has an allen key fitting in the end so as you undo the nut you can hold the threaded bit with the allen key.
Best advice I can give is to give the threaded bit a good clean with a wire brush and a good spray with WD40 or budge so the nut has a little friction as possible on the way off.
Putting the new one on is easy, just put it in place, put the nut on, put the allen key in and tighten the nut.
They sometimes come off OK, my neighbour got one off his Saab in ten mins!
Mark, many thanks for the info, looks like I'll replace both sides as they seem to be a very reasonable price.
Paula if you have light metallic tapping sound particularly when going slow over light bumps then its the same as me. I only just noticed it coming home tonight. I thought it was something loose in the boot, so drove with the rear seats folded down and soon realized it was coming from the rear axle area. Adrian
I'll pop underneath if it's dry in the morning and report back to you.
I assume that it is more an annoyance than anything else and the car will still pass an MOT?
Nitey nite
Paula

It only seems to happen at relatively low speed ( say between 30 and 50mph) and over light bumps.
Cheers hun.
Nite

PS. I have had the exhaust mountings all checked and nothing on the exhaust system is clouting the body or chassis underneath.
