not too sure myself, where is it leaking from, the drain plug? or is it a small hole? I would have thought best bet is to get a new sump, because if it is a hole due to corrosion or whatever, its only going to get worse, and you dont want to run out of oil with these cars!
someone will be along shortly with some answers to your questions, cant see it being too dramatic to fix!
I think welding is not worth it. You would have to remove the sump to get it welded and if it's off you might as well replace it. There are some sealents available but not sure how efficent they are. The problem is that the sump always has oil it. Some sort of patch might be the best bet but make sure what ever you use is heat resistant.
Getting a sump off can be a real pain, I've only done it on a Punto but it was good job I was replacing it cos the state it was in when it came off it was never going to go back on again!

I have taken the sump out before, and you need to remove the front cross member, which is a real pain, as the bolts will be so hard to get out with the car on the ground. Corrosion is very unusual on a sump, because of the oil and heat cycling. A welded patch should be fine, and last forever.
