now I have a clunk!

grrr.

so heres the short story. driving along motorway, noticed that when going over cats eyes, there was an enormous clunky noise, but then seemd ok on smooth road, figured my shock was broke? found when going round a roundabout to the right, clunk, to the left, all ok. At that time, turned out I had a flat, so got aa out, they fixed and it all seemed ok. Got my tyres done a couple of weeks and the clunk is back and getting prgressivly worse.

I can hear/feel it over any rough surface, its fine and dandy on smooth road. Its certainly the front passenger side wheel area, as the noise is so obvious. What could this be? I have new springs on there, new wishbones and new antiroll bar links (which all look ok) but could it be the shock? I cant tell if its broken or anything, any other things I can look at?

Oh no Clive !!!

Looks like we are all getting clunked out.

I am seeing Nick Clulee up in Sheffield next month so I will find out more about BaBaKa's clunk then.

Here on page 4 of my thread is what Nick said:

http://www.mx6.com/forums/united-kin...g-clunk-4.html (Annoying Clunk !!)

As you know I am not that mechanical unless it is about polishing and minor problems but I hope that you find the problem soon.

Perhaps all clunking MX-6's should have a meet at Nick Clulee's garage ....

Clive,

Have you had your wishbones replaced at all recently? Worn wishbones to tend to make rather violent noises when driven over cats' eyes, potholes, worn tarmac. Check them, and the rubber bushes where you bolt the wishbone to the body. I wouldn't rule out shock, spring or strut top bearing either.

Rob

P.S I know this cos I think wishbones are my next job

Bugger, I should read properly.

Actually, given recent experience with a drop link, I still wouldn't rule out wishbones. A new drop link that wasn't even 8 weeks old ended up faulty. Just replaced it. It can also depend somewhat on your local road surfaces, not good round here. If you've hit a pot hole particularly hard, it can damage otherwise perfectly good components.

strong possibility. it happened when I got a flat on the motorway. noticed banging when going over the cats eyes, and round the roundabout,. then ok. found tyre flat, got AA out and fixed, SEEMED ok after that but gradually its got worse and worse. New tyres on also. Jacking it up tomorrow for a better look.

hmm..no, I am 99% sure its at least soemthing on the wheel area! I havea good test system at work, where I park, there is a sort of raised section of concrete youhave to drive on to get into the car park, kind of like a speed bump lets say, when I hit that going in or out, its definatly the passenger front wheel area that goes clunk, because all 4 of the other wheels sound normal. grrrr.....darn clunks.

Hi again Clive,

That's a pity it's not something simple.

Have you a freindly MOT shop locally that can put the car up on the 4 poster, give them a few quid for a beer or two and let them have a look?

Hi Clive,

That's a shame ....

Being a woman sometimes does have it's advantages.

Smile sweetly and it's amazing what we get away with !!!!
