Yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee !!

Hey Guys,

Further to my post yesterday,

See: http://www.mx6.com/forums/united-kin...unk-knock.html (Update on BaBaKa's Clunk and Knock)

Update on BaBaKa's Clunk & Knock

I had a hospital appointment at Ashford Hospital, Middx at 2.00pm and on the way back I thought that I would pop into my favourite Exhaust and Tyre Fitting Centre - Sunbury Tyre & Exhaust in Sunbury, Middx......

They match all prices and that is why I go to them and they are dead careful when jacking up the car with their rubber insert jacks. ( You all know how fussy I am ... ).

Anyway back in April 2006, and Ben will remember this well, Rasheed had a breaking day over at his flat in Kingston, Surrey. The car in question was a 'J' spec and I am not sure whether it was a 4 wheel steer version or not.

I bought from Rasheed the whole exhaust system, repainted it and had it fitted by said exhaust fitter.

The front silencer is different to the 'E' spec as it has the small silencer too at the rear of the the front silencer pipe.

The rear silencer did not last too long although the front one is still perfect and in the Spring of this year I bought another rear silencer at my local factor and had it fitted by the above firm.

A month or so afterwards, they had to bend the pipe down to the front of the rear silencer as it was rattling against the chassis rail. This cured that rattle.

When I spoke to the same fitter today, he reminded me that I had a non standard front silencer and pipe fitted back in 2006 and it is slightly longer than the 'E' spec version.

Also he said that mounting points, holes etc do vary from 'E' spec to 'J' spec cars. Also 4WS cars are different.

On the ramp we noticed that the rubber hangers were getting softer with age and because the section of pipe that bends around the front of the fuel tank is too close on this 'J' spec exhaust, it was touching the front of the tank when pushed up and down hard.

To save removing the front silencer and pipe and cutting it down, he put plastic ties around all the rubber hangers and their mounting points and this has tightened down the excessive up and down movement.

On the way home I drove quickly over my known humps and corrugated road surfaces which would cause the knocking sound and " Hey Presto ", the noise has gone.

Whoopee !!!!

My MOT place in Addlestone, Surrey checked the rear droplinks about 6 weeks ago and said they were OK but I thought that they may have broken or something help happened since but this was not the case or anything else was wrong with the rear suspension.

So I am a very happy bunny now as one noise has now gone....

Here are the fotos of Rasheed's secondhand 'J' spec exhaust system after I repainted it and it being fitted in April 2006.

PS. That 3rd small silencer makes BaBaKa nice and quiet too which is great on a long run and I leave my Rover Metro GTI 16v with it's 2" Bore Competition Exhaust to satisfy my girl racer lust ....

Now I need to sort out the clunk from the front when going right ( but not left ) and I would bet my life - ( no I wouldn't ) that it is the new factor O/S/F caliper that was fitted last year.

Hi Clive,

You're right hun.

Crazy indeed.

Just goes to show, one can start to think the worst and the car is falling apart and hey presto, it's the most minor of problems.

I just had a sneaky feeling that the exhaust could still be the culprit although it was checked and fixed earlier in the year.

Apart from the easy cure, I have saved money by not having to buy the High Quality Rear Drop Links from Probestore and the cost of them being fitted.

A result, I feel ......

Nite

Morning Guys,

Just had an e-mail from Mark at Probestore and he thinks that the front silencer and weird small box looks like an aftermarket pipe.

As he says " The car only needs the front box on the system ".

So it could be a Japanese aftermarket exhaust that was fitted when the car was still in Japan.
