ABS light issue

My ABS light has been on since my MOT in december (the mechanic replaced both rear discs). I have only just now worked out how to read the codes (turns out you have to wait 4 seconds before it does it) and have the following:

22-Right front solenoid
24-Left front solenoid
26-Right rear solenoid
28-Left rear solenoid
53-Motor relay malfunction

I think the solenoids must be showing up just because the motor relay malfunction but I don't even know what that is! My Haynes manual only gets as far as checking the codes. Any further tests to find specifically what it is? and simple tricks to try? I hope it's not an expensive 'replace the whole unit' job.

Thanks
Robert

I think the first thing to check would be the ABS fuse fella. If that takes out the pump it could light up dash

should give all the info you need. They could have shorted a sensor to start the whole thing off.

just an update.

After following the workshop manual excerpt from the Julian Bradbury site I couldn't find the abs relay so I skipped that bit and the issue seems to be the abs motor/pump unit. As i haven't yet checked the relay it could still very well be that.

after following a similar thread on ukpoc I found a link to Edwin's abs pump replacement page which was incredibly helpful in simplifying the whole thing down. Now I'm gonna go try find the relay as I'm really hoping it's just that.

Just checked it all and the relay seems fine. the motor unit on the other hand seems to have undergone a complete and utter failure when the MOT work was done! The solenoids are supposed to be less than 3 Ohms but are all open circuit (infinite Ohms) and the motor is 6.5 Ohms but is supposed to be less than 1 Ohm!
Looks like the entire unit needs replacing (it's a sumitomo one too so it's meant to be more reliable)
The abs system was definitely working before it went in as it was icy at the time and I could feel it kicking in. It looks very dodgy to me.
The work that was done is as follows:
Nearside rear brake hose ferrule (not sure what a ferrule is)
Offside rear brake ferrule
Nearside rear brake disc
Offside rear brake disc
Nearside front anti-roll bar linkage
Nearside front brake pipe (I can see the new ones going into the abs unit)
Offside front brake pipe
Offside frontt CV joint gaiter
Rear Exhaust box

So lot's of work done in the vicinity of the abs unit which could have killed it if they did poor work. I've heard more recently that they did a crap job on someone elses brakes too. Think it's worth trying to make him fix it? The work was done in december last year but as it was only the abs not working I've left it until I had more time on my hands.

I just checked the resistances of the abs unit again and I'm getting 3.8 Ohms on all solenoids (meant to be less than 1) and 9.6 Ohms on the motor (meant to be less than 3 Ohms).
So, this is definitely the problem. the rest of the system tested ok.
My parents aren't back for another week so I can't do anything about it till then.
