MAK alloy wheels

Spotted a couple of silver cars today with mirror black alloy wheels, MG ZR and a Citroen C2. Got me thinking about my car (I have plans). What are your thoughts on these two?

I like both sets, but prefer the 1st set. Problem is theres lots of wheels out there I like but cant justify spending 50% of the value of the car on wheels/tyres alone.

You're probably right. However, my six needs a fair bit of work body wise to keep it in good condition in any case. I've decided it'll be a project, not a huge expensive one involving outrageous bodykits, turbos etc. but just enough to be better than it already is.

I know what you mean rob, but these cars can be improved on a budget without throwing crazy money at them.

Me and Paul turned this

into this

and havent broken the bank doing it. Total spend on the car, including purchase is proberbly about a grand, although some parts have come off breaker cars or have been swaps like the wheels and suspension. There are deals out there and good value for money mods, you just need to know where to look and be prepared to put in the hard work with the spanners.

To be honest Stu, your car as well as Chris Judd's and Piers14's are along the lines of how I'd like mine to be. I'm not talking about a direct copy, but it's the quality of the job I'd like to see. All I'm thinking is:

Respray in original colour
Reasonably priced lowering kit
Scorpion exhaust
Nice set of alloys
Retrim (I admit to some cost saving as OH reckons she can do it)

I don't intend doing much, if anything, to the engine and I'll be renewing old parts. I have some experience with the spanners and a stepson who comes in very handy with the parts I can't do.

I reckon it'll cost at least a couple of grand, but as I say, I want to keep the car. I'm not attempting to add value to the car, as that is somewhat pointless, it's what you might call a labour of love. We both love this car, it's fast, reliable, comfortable and although we once considered changing it, nothing would be further from our minds now.

sounds like you have a good clear plan there Rob, I like both sets, I think I prefer the first set BUT have you considered the alloys with black inner, red trim outer? they look MEAN on a red mx6, and not bad on a silver...what colour is yours again?

I want to spend a little on mine, but its taking time. My other car (4x4 ford maverick) needs attention right now so cant really afford to do anything other than fix my clunk. I hope to renew the shocks and springs, lower it again a touch, paint the calipers again (used to all be bright blue), new led light bulbs, tinted rear lights and soem body work touch up. if I can do it cheap I also want new driver and passenger window glass, as mine is scratched...!!

I've thought about black, anthracite or gunmetal before now, and I'm just not sure about them. My car is Platinum Silver.

Regards lights, I spotted a black 6 with those Audi style led's fitted to the headlights and fogs. Actually looked rather cool.

TBH Rob, up close my car my car needs work, bigtime.

The drivers rear 1/4 is a different shade, stonechips and scratches on the front, havent finished the debadge properly, alloys are scuffed etc etc.

I too could throw a grand at the car to make it as good as poss but cant justify it and enjoy the car as it is. I just do it a bit at a time when I get the bits etc.

That's similar to the way my car is right now. Dents in both front wings, dings down both sides in different places, stonechips on the bonnet, peeling lacquer in one or two places, scratches in various places, sunroof showing signs of rusting. The alloys have seen better days. I could go on.

What annoys me sometimes is that I get people telling me I should buy a newer car, scrap it for a couple of grand and get something newer. I ask myself whether I should or shouldn't do it and then I find this forum and I have my answer. Why on earth should I do that when it's a perfectly good and reliable vehicle? I would get a sense of acheivement personally in keeping a fantastic car on the road, and enjoying it even more than I already do.

agreed, these cars are gorgeous. Nothing else like em on the road, the older they get, the better they look. I always get looks (I am very shy, so i dont go out for that) and people asking about it. I used to in my old 323f too, and my old Prelude (the prelude WAS wicked, I have to say!) but i get much more in the six, its nice in a way because its all positive.

these are great cars to do up, just see Stu and Pauls, i mean, thats just a beauty, i love it, he got it quite cheap, and in a bit of a state i think and now its a fine example.

man boys that cars engine looks amazing, how did u do it? i want to do it to when i get a second car for driving about. how did u polish it up like that? and how did u do it all for a grand?

i really want to start on mine, but the body work is putting me off, cause rust just keeps coming back once u start.. but it really needs a respray, and alloys, which is no less that £1500 to start.

where did you get the trim on the front bumber from?
and how much to get a number plate like that? does it fit easily?
the number plate change makes a nice difference.

The trim is from a Renault Espace, but you can also use a Laguna one which is thinner. They are a direct fit, just screws on. Needs 5/10mm each end trimming off.

The UK bumper has the recess in it for a square plate but Mazda put a plastic surround on it for a standard plate. The surround unscrews from the bumper to reveal the recess, then a square plate is around £12 from any motor factors/halfords. It can be screwed or stuck on.

Makes a big difference IMO, it makes the front look tighter
