Seems the old girl isn't quite as healthy as I thought. It's not had much of a run out since Japfest and I just put it in for an MOT and it failed emissions by a mile. The guy said it was fine at 3000rpm but was running very rich at idle. I knew it was running rich but I just wish I knew why. I need to pull the codes tomorrow (i'm sure there's an utterly idiot proof guide on here somewhere) but does anyone have any other bright ideas.
I've got about two weeks to get it sorted before a holiday or i'm going to have my balls removed with a rusty spoon.
I thought it was probably 02 sensors but it did pass the lambda test. Does that make a difference? It failed by quite a long way, would 02 sensors cause that? Will have a look at it later, just come off nights so sleep is in order.
Did you make sure you gave it a good blast on the road before the test? I does make a difference.
Try some injector cleaner in the fuel as well before the next test.
When I failed the emission test last year, the Os-sensors did the trick (even without the blast). The other thing was the higher fuel consumption. I've heard many people say the combo of these two links the O2 sensors. So my bet? Change both O2 sensors after you've monitored if your MX has become very thirsty. Mine used up 1L every 7km. prior to the sensor change. Now the beast averages 11.5km to the litre.
11.5 to a litre Marco? Was that on the back of a trailer, lmao
On a run to the New Forest earlier this year I did 200 miles exactly on 25 litres and thats my record (36.4mpg). Hopefully with that sort of economy I wont have to look at the O2's when its MOT'd on Friday.
1 gallon=4.6 litres? You did 321 kilometers on 25L = 1:12.8 wich I could do as well.
On average (!!!) the consumption is 1:11.5 On a longer stretch the economy gets to about yours. I use my car every day to get to work, about 25 miles (12.5 / 12.5). Short trips with lots of traffic lights. And in that case my consumption isn't that bad??!!
Sorry guys, can I have a bit more help on this one? I've tried pulling the codes but they came back saying I either had no faults or, more likely, I buggered up pulling the codes. It's been to three garages, had 3 diagnostics, and everyone seems to be clueless.
Decided to assume you guys were right and change the O2 sensors but wasn't sure which parts I needed. Can someone have a look on here and tell me what I need please
depends, you need either the 3 wire or 4 wire lamda/o2 sensors (middle of the list), £29.99 ish without plug and £72.99 odd ish for ones with the plugs on...no idea how much your garage would charge to swap the plugs from your old ones to the new ones, but if that san issue, bite the bullet and get the £72.99 ones for ease, no idea how much these are else where, but somone should be abel to advise shortly!
